(Boston, MA) – Artfact bidders certainly beat the holiday rush this season. During November's live sales online bidders at Artfact snapped up thousands of items, with gift-friendly categories like wine, books and toys leading the pack.

Wine lovers rejoiced when Toronto-based Waddington's Auctioneers & Appraisers partnered with the LCBO for their November 12th - 14th "Vintages Auction". The sale, which included a wide assortment of premium wines, generated over 1.2 million dollars in online demand from over 1,200 online bids.

At National Book Auctions sales continued strong with online buyers purchasing more than 60% of the lots sold in both their November 7th and November 21st auctions. Among the highlights was a first edition of "Gone with the Wind". With 27 bids placed through Artfact, the 1936 edition sold online for $400 during their November 7th sale.

Matchbox collectors also had something to cheer about during the second installment of "The Horace Dunkley Matchbox Collection" on November 9th and 10th. Of the 1,525 vintage Matchbox cars offered by Vectis Auctions Ltd., online buyers accounted for more than 50% of sales with 2,500 bids placed online.

Ch’ien Lung Period Jade Carving of the Ho-Ho Boys

With 457 bidders driving online demand over $940,000, it was a diminutive Ch’ien Lung Jade carving that helped set the tone during Thomaston Place Auction Galleries November 6th and 7th sale. Measuring just 1 5/8” high, the white and brown Jade carving of two ho-ho boys was expected to bring between $600 and $800. Thanks to the participation of several online bidders, the 18th century Chinese carving toppled estimates – selling online for an astounding $17,000.

Maynard’s Antique & Fine Art Ltd., “Contemporary Art” – November 24, 2010
Shi Guoliang Chinese (1956-), “Three Ladies,” ink and colour on paper
Price Realized: CAD62,500
With demand for Chinese antiquities and classical art stronger than ever, sales of Chinese Contemporary Art are also on the rise. One of the highlights of Maynards’ November 24th "Contemporary Art" auction was a work entitled “Three Ladies” by Chinese monk and artist Shi Guoliang (1956-). Like his teacher Huang Zhou (1925-1997), Shi Guolian combines Western sketching techniques and traditional Chinese painting to bring life and movement to his subjects. While “Three Ladies” attracted some pre-sale interest, it was still a welcome surprise when the work sold online for CAD62,500 – more than double its top estimate.

Waddington's, “International Art Auction” – November 30, 2010
Francisco Zuniga (1912 -1998), “Juchiteca Sentada”
Price Realized: CAD19,680
Born in Costa Rica, premier Mexican painter and sculptor Francisco Zuniga (1912-1998) first learned sculpture from his father, Manuel Maria Zuniga. After moving to Mexico City in 1936, Zuniga studied with Guillermo Ruiz and Oliverio Martinez under whose tutelage his mature style began to develop. By combining primitive Aztec forms with the classical style practiced by his father, Zuniga created a new regional style embodied in the stocky peasant figure of “Juchiteca Sentada.” One of two Zuniga bronzes in Waddington’s November 30th auction, “Juchiteca Sentada” sold online for CAD19,680 (including buyers premium).
