Press release from: Beach Betty Public Relations

Cone will be one of several Central California community leaders to speak on the new media panel of the LATISM-sponsored Latino2 event in San Luis Obispo

Latinos in Social Media (LATISM), the largest organization of social media professionals of Hispanic origin, has announced that Beach Betty Public Relations’ owner, Shelly Cone is scheduled as one of the speakers of the upcoming Latino2 event, “Community and Collaboration in Central California: Then and Now,” Dec. 4 in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

The LATISM-sponsored event is the second in a year-long series of California mini-conferences called Latino2, with the goal of celebrating and exploring all things Latino in the age of digital and social engagement.

“The series is aimed at educating business leaders, civics leaders and students in the Latino community on the new rules and tools of social communication,” said Giovanni Rodriguez, co-producer of the Latino2 event series and boardmember of LATISM.

Cone said she is looking forward to being a part of the new media panel at the event.

“It’s exciting to be part of this event, especially in a culturally diverse community like the Central Coast. I think this is a fantastic way for the community to come out and have their voices heard and learn a few things about communicating in the age of social media,” she said.
Cone is a longtime journalist and owner of Beach Betty Public Relations, a Santa Barbara County-based public relations and social media management company. She will discuss the changes in how media has portrayed Latinos and covered Latino issues in recent years. She’ll talk about the different ways Latinos can make their voices heard and get the attention of journalists through traditional methods and social media.
She will join other speakers like Hilda Zacarias, Councilwoman and Mayor Pro Tem of the City of Santa Maria and an active leader in the Central California community; Cristina Gonzalez, a trainer, educator and consultant with more than 10 years of experience in implementing bilingual programs, workshops on leadership, youth development, social justice, and other issues; and Dorinda Moreno, who has devoted nearly four decades to developing support for indigenous and multicultural issues in the U.S., Mexico, Central and South America and the Caribbean.
The San Luis Obispo Latino2 event is also significant because it will launch the LATISM 2012 campaign, a two-year, non-partisan, national campaign aimed at educating and mobilizing Latino voters in advance of the 2012 general election.

Rodriguez said Central California is a perfect place to launch the LATISM 2012 campaign. It’s one of the several places in the U.S. where Latinos first learned to organize around common interests, and it’s where some of the new rules and tools of community and collaboration are being tested,” Rodriguez said.
