The Assembly - an Indyish Film and Music Relay

02-07-2007 10:49 AM CET | Arts & Culture

Press release from: Indyish

Relay: February 10-March 9, 2007
Screening: March 10, 2007. Friendship Cove
Montreal, QC.

Following on the success of Indyish's December's Holla-Days Party and Music Video Making with Pop Montreal, Indyish.com is producing a brand new film-and music-making event. This latest project, The Assembly, is a non-competitive, assembly-line style of collaborative art making. The Assembly will produce a series of 10 minute short films with original soundtracks as ideas are passed off relay-style from writers to directors to musicians throughout the month of February.

The Assembly kicks off on February 10th with a week for each step of its development. Writing teams will be given a common starting point, the original sheet music for a rock opera by a Canadian indie rock band. Their challenge is to write a 10 minute film script using at least five lyrical or thematic elements from the song. Each script will be passed into the hands of a team of filmmakers who will shoot and edit it.

The final lap is run by musicians, including Graham Van Pelt of Think About Life and Miracle Fortress; Tyler Rauman of Telefauna; and Conor Prendergast of Brave Radar, who will each take one of the films and create an original soundtrack.

As the project moves forward, passing from hand to hand, teams will make notes in a group script made public at the end of every day on Indyish.com, using the collaborative open source writing program Celtx. Celtx will allow participants to have a keen sense of the intentions of the artists whose work they are building upon. It maintains every version of the project, creating a unique document of creative transformation throughout the The Assembly.

The Assembly is an artistic relay race that brings unique talents and ideas into each stage of its development. Participants will be challenged to translate written music into words, words into images, and images into audio, while building an innovative indie, open source film event in the process.

The final films will be screened at Friendship Cove in Montreal, on March 10th with live soundtracks performed by the musicians involved.

The finished products of The Assembly will include a project 'zine and a DVD with the completed short films and live concert footage.

Participation in The Assembly is open to anyone with interest in the project. Scriptwriters, filmmakers, and musicians can sign up on Indyish.com until February 7th and the relay will begin February 10th.

Space is limited and will be determined by the number of applicants at each stage. Sign up must be completed by February 7th and teams will be announced at the start of the project on February 10th.

Timeline:
February 10-16: Scriptwriting
February 17-23: Filmmaking
February 24-March 2: Musicmaking
March 10: Screening at Friendship Cove

Indyish strongly believes in the ability of artistic challenges to bring about new freedom of creation. The Assembly is Indyish's latest take on the challenges of collaboration that bring artists together from different backgrounds and genres to create original, interesting work.

Indyish.com is an online indie boutique, a network of artists, and a tricked out group blog launched officially with a weekend of activities in August 2006. Indyish works for the independent artist, recognizing the strength in local community and real world collaboration. That’s why we throw events, why we’re obsessive about search engine optimization, and it’s why we’re Indy-ISH; growing in the space where personal creativity meets organized collectivity.
