The award is based on a two-part process that enables analysts to assess and rank workplaces based on data that determines company strengths. The first part of the process requires participating companies to complete a questionnaire, which captures information regarding workplace policies, practices and demographics. An employee engagement and satisfaction survey makes up the second part of the evaluation. Here, employees are asked to respond to approximately 72 statements by using a five point agreement scale. Additionally, the survey includes two open-ended questions and seven demographic questions. Based on the ratio to overall company size, a specific number of employees are randomly selected by Best Companies Group to participate in the survey.

Best Companies Group categorizes the results into eight core focus areas: Leadership and Planning, Corporate Culture and Communications, Role Satisfaction, Work Environment, Relationship with Supervisor, Training and Development, Pay and Benefits, and Overall Engagement.
