On National Girl Child Day Banasthali Girls Get Empowered for a Brighter Tomorrow

The 1.1 billion girls of today’s world are challenging the status quo. They’re redefining girlhood, and they’re doing so against the odds. Across the world, girls face adversities that hinder their education, training and entry into the workforce.

The status of Girl child both globally and in India today is alarming. According to UNICEF, each year approximately 12 million girls under 18 will be married. According to UNESCO Institute for Statistics, globally more than 130 million girls are not attending primary or secondary school. According to UNFPA, approximately 2 million girls under age 15 become pregnant every year. According to WHO, complications during pregnancy and childbirth are the leading causes of death for 15-19 year old girls globally and 99% of all maternal deaths occur in developing countries. According to FAO, 60% of undernourished people worldwide are women and girls. According to World Bank, for every extra year a girl stays in school, her income can increase by 11%.

India celebrates National Girl Child Day on January 24 promoting the importance of girls in our societies. The day came into existence in 2008 after being initiated by the Ministry of Women and Child Development. National Girl Child Day spreads awareness on issues faced by girls in the country and gender equality. Education, health and nutrition are among the important things discussed on this day. 'Empowering Girls for a Brighter Tomorrow' is the theme for National Girl Child Day 2019.

On 24 Jan 2019 to mark the 12th National Girl Child Day, Ms Neeharika Agrawal third year BTech Chemical Engineering student coordinated the organizing of a networking session among students of all years of chemical engineering at SBI auditorium. The objective was to work on transferable skills – such as self-confidence, decision making, problem solving, teamwork and critical thinking – which are essential to succeed in the rapidly changing world of work. Many girls do not have access to mentors, career guidance or the training they need to transition from college to work.

Senior students from fourth year who had done their internship in leading institutions like IIP Dehradun, BARC Mumbai etc across India shared their experiences and gave tips for making the best out of Internships. Senior students who had secured placement with Industry Majors like Aditya Birla Group, Honeywell Technologies, McDermott etc shared their preparation strategies for Aptitude Test, Interview, Group Discussion etc. Senior students who actively participated in the networking session included Aanchal Mehendiratta, Tanya Sharma, Pragati Sharma. Shivani Mishra, Sanskriti Garg and Navdeep Kaur Sidhu.

When the session ended, the students who had come for the function left with beaming faces and pride that they were indeed part of an institution which is a jewel in the crown among the women’s universities not only in India today but across the globe
