IPAID Celebrates opening day ceremony
Wonju, South Korea, November 24, 2010: The Institute for Poverty Alleviation and International Development (IPAID) at Yonsei University, Wonju is celebrating its opening with renowned anti-poverty leaders, international entertainment, and a cake cutting ceremony. The program begins at 10am, Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at University Church on Yonsei University’s Wonju campus.
The day will begin with a morning Expert Roundtable on international development and poverty alleviation strategies. The event will be chaired by Demetrios Argyriades, renowned international consultant to the United Nations and adjunct professor at New York University. Also participating in the discussion will be H.E. Eugene S. Kayihura, Ambassador of Rwanda to the Republic of Korea; Jay Lee, Executive Director of Asia for One Laptop Per Child; Professor Tegegne Gebre-Egziabher, former coordinator of Regional & Local Development Studies at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia; and Yonsei University Professor of International Politics Sangbum Shin.
The roundtable will be followed by the opening ceremony with remarks by the director of IPAID, Professor Pan Suk Kim. The Masters of Ceremonies will be Yonsei University Professor Jangsaeng Kim of the Canaan Global Leadership Center in Wonju and Christal Phillips, visiting professor and managing editor at IPAID.
Guest speakers include Dr. Han-Joong Kim, President of Yonsei University; Dr. Dae-won Park, President of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA); Ambassador Hyun Cho, Deputy Minister for Multilateral and Global Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade who will give the keynote address; Madame Shoney Batenga, Senior Private Secretary to the Vice President of Uganda; and Dr. Ki-Soo Han, Vice President of Yonsei University, Wonju.
Guests will also enjoy performances by the Yonsei University choir and critically acclaimed performance group Strong Afrika.

The Institute for Poverty Alleviation and International Development (IPAID) was established as a university-wide research institution at Yonsei University, Wonju on March 23, 2010. The goal of IPAID is to alleviate poverty and promote sustainable international development through various domestic and international collaborations and comprehensive research on regional and global poverty reduction around the world. IPAID was chosen by the National Research Foundation of Korea as a Core University Research Center in 2010. This important research grant will help fund the publication of the Journal for Poverty Alleviation and International Development (JPAID), poverty seminars, and field research in developing nations.
