Marinello Schools of Beauty Students Give Back to the Women of Portland

Press release from: Marinello Schools of Beauty

Even during times of recession, women rarely compromise when it comes to beauty. Although most women are willing to cut back in other areas of their life to look stylish, there are many women who have fallen on hard times and are living without basic necessities.

This holiday season, students at Marinello Schools of Beauty are working with two nonprofit organizations to provide women with not only basic provisions but also the joy and self-assurance that come from feeling gorgeous.

Students Organize Winter Clothing Drive

On Tuesday, November 16, Marinello students began collecting donations of winter clothing that will be donated to the Portland Rescue Mission Shepherd’s Door program. The program helps provide a refuge of safety and healing for women and children.

"We are anticipating a cold winter and with fewer beds available this year, we know warm clothing, blankets and personal hygiene products are gratefully received by those who will spend time out in the elements,” said Jan Marshall, Director of Women’s Ministries for the Portland Rescue Mission. “Thanks to Marinello Schools of Beauty, we can help keep the homeless warmer this winter."

People can bring clothing donations for the Portland Rescue Mission to the Marinello campus through Wednesday, November 24 at 10 a.m. At that time, the students will present Marshall with all the donations.

“Our students know how lucky they are to not only have access to necessities like food and shelter but also the opportunity to pursue a career they are passionate about,” said Marinello Campus Director Stephen Prisby. “The students wanted to provide women who have not been as fortunate with something as basic as clothing so that these women could focus on their dreams too.”

Students Provide Salon Services to Women Preparing for Job Interviews

From now until December 31, Marinello is offering Dress for Success Oregon’s clients complimentary haircuts and discounted spa services. Dress for Success Oregon is an organization that promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire and career development support and training.

Dress for Success Oregon has their own salon staffed by volunteer make-up artists and licensed stylists, including Marinello student Carrie Tabor, but they are unable to offer as many appointments as they would like. Marinello stepped in to help meet their needs.

“Due to our clients’ limited income, being pampered is not something they experience regularly. Many of them have not had their hair cut in years or have never been taught how to apply make-up,” said Dress for Success Oregon Volunteer Coordinator Caryn Servis. “The Marinello staff and students have been very accommodating and generous and we hope that the students continue their relationship with us when they’ve entered the professional workforce.”
