Banasthali National Youth Day Swami Vivekananda 156 Jayanti

The ethereal sage Swami Vivekananda who was the original feminist and the first among spiritual leaders in modern times to speak for the masses is an icon not only in India yesterday but also India today and India Tomorrow.

The Thinker - Saint Swami Vivekananda played a stellar role in ending India's cultural isolation from the rest of the world thus becoming India's first great cultural ambassador to the West. As much as Swamiji wanted the westerners to learn spirituality from the Indians, he wanted Indians to learn from westerners not only science and technology but also humanism by adopting ideas of individual freedom, social equality and justice and respect for women. It is a matter of pride that Banasthali Vidyapith aims at the synthesis of spiritual values and scientific achievements of both the East and the West.

The Harvard philosopher William James called Vivekananda as the "paragon of Vedantists" as Swamiji was the one who brought out that religion which is indeed the Science of Consciousness is as scientific as science itself and established that religion and science are not contradictory to each other but are complementary.

Youth can undoubtedly be change makers in thrust areas like promotion of national values, social harmony, national unity, education, health, sports and recreation, gender justice, participation in community service, environment and climate change issues, local government etc.

On 12 Jan 2019, at Vigyan Mandir Banasthali, Natioanl Youth Day was celebrated. The proceedings began with a brief biography of Swami Vivekananda by Prof BR Natarajan Department of Chemical Engineering which was followed by a video on Swamji by Ramakrishna Math Chennai. A group of 15 BTech third year Chemical Engineering students Aakriti, Aditi Tibrewal, Anjali, Avani, Anushka, Pragati, Prachi, Monika, Neeharika, Varnika, Mushfarah, Ishika, Nishi, Sakshi and Muskan Singh spoke on their youth icons Riyaz Gangji of Libas, Devangi Nishar Parekh of AZA, Super 30 Anand Kumar, Padman Arunachalam Muruganantham, Menstrupedia Aditi Gupta, Versova beach clean Afroz Shah, Hasina Kharbhith of NGO Impulse, Harish Hande of SELCO, Jignesh Mevani politician, Badminton super star and Banasthali Alumnus P V Sindhu, Gymnastics Dipa Karmakar, Boxer Vijender Singh, Ballet dancer Amiruddin Shah, St+Art Hanif Kureshi and Weird Indie music Doppelganger Sahej Bakshi.

The Chief Guest for the proceedings was Prof Veerendra Kumar Mishra from Banasthali who holds triple MA (English Literature, Liguistics and Philosophy) and MPhil from University of Delhi and PhD from IIT Roorkee. His interests and expertise include Modern Literature, Literary theory and Criticism and Philosophy of Language. He has authored a book titled “Modern Novels & Poetics of Self” loaded with Theoretical and Philosophical Underpinnings of Empiricism, Cognitivism, Pragmatism, Structuralism, Formalism, Psychoanalysis, Post-colonialism, Modernism, Postmodernism, Marxism, Cultural Materialism, Historicism, Feminism, Neo-Platonism, And Aestheticism. His second book is titled “A Modern Criticism on Language and Literature” and third book is in press. Prof Natarajan introduced the chief guest to the audience and Innovative Chemical Engineers’ ICE Club president Ms Sakshi Bajania welcomed him with a colourful bouquet.

Addressing the students Prof Mishra in his inimitable style gave an overview of Philosophy. He said that Philosophy uses the tools of logic and reason to analyze the ways in which humans experience the world and it teaches critical thinking, close reading, clear writing, and logical analysis; it uses these to understand the language humans use to describe the world, and their place within it. He reiterated that Philosophy seeks not simply knowledge, but deep understanding and wisdom. Ms Bhawana Joshi Vice President presented the Chief Guest with a glittering memento on behalf of ICE Club.

The students and faculty who attended and participated in National Youth Day celebrations left with beaming faces and pride that they were indeed part of an institution which is a jewel in the crown among the women’s universities not only in India today but across the globe.
