Gamays of the world compete

Inter Beaujolais has decided to promote Gamay, the iconic variety of its region with the organisation of the International Gamay Competition. Mindful that one of the selection criteria for a wine is the grape variety it is made from, through this competition the inter-professional body are looking to reinforce Gamay’s image and raise its profile with both consumers and producers the world over.
The very first edition of the “Concours International du Gamay” is being held on 15th January 2011 in Lyon.
This aim of the competition, organised by Inter Beaujolais, is twofold:
-To strengthen Gamay’s image and prominence with consumers. Especially considering that this variety fits perfectly with their current expectations: a fruity, easy wine with low tannins yet interesting complexity and true ageing potential.
-To unveil the Gamay grape’s diversity and strengths throughout the world to producers, deciders and consumers.

The competition is open to winemakers from the whole world whose wines are made using the Gamay grape variety (with a minimum of 85%).
After tasting by a jury of wine experts and professionals, the Concours International du Gamay will award the following prizes; Grande Médaille d’Or (Grand Gold Medal), Médaille d’Or (Gold Medal) and Médaille d’Argent (Silver Medal) to the wines that best exemplify the qualities of this grape variety.
Producers may enter up to 17th December 2010 by filling in the form in the competition website: www.concoursgamay.com
Inter Beaujolais will unveil the competition results on 22nd January 2011 at the first “Place des Vins” professional show within a show at SIRHA (the global hotel and food service food show) in Lyon from 22nd to 26th January.
