So how do our playgrounds stack-up? A calorie burn study
A recent research study sponsored by KOMPAN Play Institute involved two schools with children from first, second and third grades. They participated in 30 minutes of free play on playground equipment. The calories expended were measured by the Bio Trainer II Calorie Counter and results calculated based on each child’s body weight. The playground equipment was school-age playground equipment: Galaxy, Supernova, Elements, Vega and Spica. The Galaxy and are both larger structures intended for lots of children and the Supernova, Vega and Spica are smaller individual pieces intended for one child or small group play.
Our knock-out findings
On average; first, second, and third grade children, burn more than ⅔ (actual calories burnt: 112) of the required daily 150 calories during 30 minutes of play on KOMPAN school-aged playgrounds. The playgrounds included Galaxy, Supernova, Vega, Spica and Elements.
On average; first and second grade children burn on average ⅔ of the required 150 calories (actual calories burnt: 100) during 30 minutes of play. KOMPAN equipment was: Galaxy, Supernova, Vega, and Spica.
On average; first, second, and third grade children burn more than ⅔ of the required 150 calories (actual calories burnt: 128) during 30 minutes of play. KOMPAN equipment was: Elements.
AND… on average, third grade children burn more than 150 calories during 30 minutes of play. KOMPAN equipment was: Elements, Galaxy and Supernova (actual calories burnt: 152).
