Funny Translator is a new creative web project founded by two Manhattan based language teams: Translation Services USA and the programmers of their recently launched subsidiary company, ConveyThis.com.

“Funny Translator is an admittedly bad translation service, which loops through languages, causing often amusing mistranslations,” explains Alex Buran, sole founder and CEO of Translation Services USA. “We created Funny Translator to serve as a light-hearted metaphor for the cumulative error and inaccuracies often found in common mechanical translations. It’s also pretty hilarious to see some of the results!”

By revealing the limitations of automated translation services, such as Google Translator, Yahoo! and Babel Fish, the goal in creating Funny translator is to promote the need for hands-on, high-quality human translations for important business-related texts, i.e. legal documents, corporate websites and instruction manuals. It’s also a lot of fun!

Here’s how it works: Funny Translator translates back-and-forth, between English and variety of foreign languages, using Google Translator. The program then repeats the process up to 56 times. Each translation progressively becomes more distorted. Due to the cumulative effect of machine translation errors along the line, the final text differs significantly, warping the original phrase to an often incoherent, laughable translation.

It’s simple: Just enter any text in English and click "Translate!"

The famous Shakespearean dilemma, “To be or not to be,” after 56 translation cycles, translates to, “Or it could be useful.” Hmmm... Hamlet is a lot more definitive this way!

Some text will be unrecognizable after only a few steps.

After 10 cycles, the wise words of Benjamin Franklin, “A place for everything, everything in its place,” become the slightly less poignant, “The apartments are all over the place, everything is fine.” What does that even mean?

Also, as an added bonus for all the tech junkies out there, the final METEOR score (a formula created to measure the accuracy of the mechanical translators) is calculated for each individual translation in the the cycle. The complete translation log is then displayed in full detail, providing users with a more technical assessment of the measured accuracy in the translation. It varies with each entry.

Particularly amusing translations can be shared instantly for public display. Users can submit their best translations to Funny Translator, where they are then voted on by visitors, and the funniest translations listed in order of rank. Site administrators will also post their favorite mistranslations to the Funny Translator Facebook fan page, which has already gathered a following of 6,000+ fans. Users also have the option of subscribing to the Funny Translator "Best Of" email newsletter, located on the home page, receive updates including the Best of the Worst Translations!
