Inspired by Mark Twain Tom Sawyer Adventures JMA Students Paint the School Walls in Shekhawati Rajasthan

Some of India’s most prosperous business families the Birlas, Piramals, Oswals, Mittals, Ruias, Lohias, Goenkas, Singhanias and Agarwals, to name a few have their roots in Shekhawati region of Rajasthan. Spread across 13,784 sqkm, hundreds of painted havelis sought to outdo the other, making Shekhawati the largest open-air gallery in Rajasthan.

Popularly known as school with 100% results, Smt. Jamuna Mishra Academy (JMA) established in the year 2004 is presently one of the most sought after schools at Pilani considered as Oasis in the desert state of Rajasthan well known in India today for top ranking institutions like Birla Institute of Technology and Science BITS Pilani University as well as CSIR Laboratory CEERI, L.N. While school students of CBSE might have heard of episodes from the Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, students of many state boards may not have even heard of Tom Sawyer. Among the adventures of Tom Sawyer, Painting the Fence has always been an all time favorite. However, Principal JMA Pilani Mrs Booma Natarajan makes it a point to share stories from various classics irrespective of syllabus to entertain as well as motivate the students and to encourage them to read the story books from the school library.

JMA Pilani was considering the painting of the walls in the school play ground during winter vacation and a group of 11 students (5 Boys and 6 Girls from Class 9 and 11) led by the arts teacher Ms Preeti Gupta came forward and offered to do it. They selected four pictures – one depicting typical Rajasthan village, one on yoga, one from famous artist Padma Bhushan Jamini Roy from Bengal and one modern art of MF Hussain type.

This has become talk of Pilani town and is drawing crowds to cheer the students.
