CONTROVERSIAL STORE BACK ONLINE AFTER HACKER ATTACK

09-27-2010 09:37 AM CET | Leisure, Entertainment, Miscellaneous

Press release from: TNMG Holdings, LLC

The New Management Group announced on Friday that a controversial e-commerce store was back online after hackers took it down more than two weeks ago.

According to Keith Evans, CEO of The New Management Group, hackers used an exploit in e-commerce shopping cart software to take down TheVoreStore.com in early September. “The store database became corrupt,” Evans said, “and the entire store went offline.” Customers were unable to access the store, place orders or retrieve purchased content since at least September 5th.

Although Evans could not elaborate on why hackers targeted the store, the unique and controversial nature of the online store may have played a role in the attack. TheVoreStore.com sells digital videos that depict women and some men swallowing live goldfish, betta fish, jewelry and trinkets, and animal rights activists have expressed some concern about the store’s digital content. According to The New Management Group records, TheVoreStore.com conducted a modest amount of business, but webmasters had received at least one threatening email prior to the attack.

Despite the site’s extended unavailability, Evans stressed that hackers did not compromise the personal information of The Vore Store customers. “We collect only very limited information,” he explained, “and we do not store credit card numbers on our servers.” Evans went on to point out that the attackers intended to take the site offline rather than steal sensitive information.

Before bringing TheVoreStore.com back online, The New Management Group implemented a number of additional security measures. Webmasters changed the store’s platform to use more secure shopping cart software, moved databases to more secure servers and underwent a compliance check to ensure customer privacy.

“We’re still loading some content,” Evans said on Friday, “but the store is 90 percent operational as of today.” According to Evans, the new TheVoreStore.com will feature a new look and feel, but the store will continue to sell digital media that depicts the swallowing and consumption of live fish and inanimate objects.

The New Management Group provides web development, e-commerce, adult media and project management services from its offices in Orlando, Fla.
