Press release from: Typevents LLP

More than 30 speakers from 20 different countries, representing 15 nationalities. This results from the list of participating actors at Imagine iT, international conference and the first of its kind in Italy, that will discuss cultural differences in the world of writing, typography, graphic design and visual communication. The conference will take place at the Accademia di Belle Arti (Academy of Fine Arts) in Bologna, Italy from March 22 – 24, 2007.

Lectures will be given by today’s contributors to graphic design history, such as George Hardie (with his design for the Pink Floyd LP cover ‘The Dark Side of the Room’) and Piero de Macchi (designer of the font for the Italian Yellow Pages), protagonists of contemporary visual communication like Etienne Mineur (member of the French studio Incandescente and designer for Issey Miyake), Mirko Pajé (creative director of Mediaset), Andreu Balius (founder of the Barcelona-based Typerware). Further scientists of international format such as Brian Lucid (Massachusetts College of Art) and Giovanni Anceschi (IUVA Venice) will be presenting at Imagine iT.

A part of the already mentioned, many of the speakers at the conference, in accordance to the theme are actively mixing cultures by lifestyle: they are migrants themselves. Like Jan Middendorp, Belgium of origin, type and graphic designer of international recognition these days living in Berlin, Germany, Key note speaker at Imagine iT; James Clough, English gentleman and an international expert of typography, resident in Italy for more three decades; Meena Kadri, New Zealander living in Indian, currently residing in Scotland; Johanna Bilak, Czech academic and for many years now resident in the Netherlands and Rathna Ramanathan, researcher on Indian graphic design living in the UK.

And many other names of recognition are to be mentioned: First and foremost Leonardo Sonnoli (Tassinari/Vetta), member of the AGI board and president of the Italian division of Alliance Graphique Internationale, the prestigious international club of the worlds leading designers that has given patronage to Imagine iT. The conference is further proud to have received the endorsement of many other type and design organisations: the TDC, Type Directors Club (USA); AGD, Alliance of German Designers and F2F FaceToFace (Germany); Alliance Francaise des Designer (France); ADI Associazione per il Disegno Industriale and AIAP Associazione Italiana Progettazione per la Communicazione Visiva (Italy).

For the workshops there are tantalizing subjects, such as: ‘Audience generated narrative’ by Timothy Donaldson from the US, ‘A concept for a magazine’ by Rojo from Spain; ‘Slam Poetry’ by Kirstin Hughes and Deobrah Shmerler (performing typography) from the United States as well as the young Italians called Meat will be showing relations between graffiti, street art and graphic design.

“Cause for the excellent response to the call for papers – says Carlo Branzaglia, who is organizing the event on behalf of the Accademia di Belle Arti of Bologna – has been the idea of the theme: talking about culture as the fruit of profession and tradition - current as well as historical - that find their beginning in writing and visual communication. And Italy home of the Latin alphabet, which has been adopted by the western world is the ideal place to address this theme. ”

“Organizing an event of this kind is the result of a newly formed collaboration between Typevents, a company offering innovative services, active within the cultural field, and an institute of centuries of tradition like the Accademia di Belle Arti of Bologna. And in various ways the conference will mirror this thrilling mix of tradition and innovation.” states Simone Wolf, partner of Typevents LLP, running its European Office in Italy.

And last but not least the exhibitions, important element of the conference Imagine iT, ought to be mentioned. Amongst these Italian Renaissance, organized by Kalimera. An anthology showing some of today’s Italian graphic design, inspired by the homonymous book, issued by Red Publishing; Prove di lettura, a photographic scope on the theme of books showing the works of students of the Academy, organized by Gianni Gosdan as well as Fun Font, an a exhibition on the prototypes of digital typography, and at the same time a tribute to the recently passed away Piermario Ciani.
