Central New York Regional Planning and Development Board (CNY RPDB) Joins ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability

SYRACUSE, NY – The Central New York Regional Planning and Development Board has become one of the first regional councils in the U.S. to join ICLEI USA as a regional affiliate. ICLEI is an international membership association of local governments dedicated to climate protection and sustainable development. The organization was established in 1990 when more than 200 local governments from 43 countries convened at the World Congress of Local Governments for a Sustainable Future, at the United Nations in New York. Established as the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives, the official name is now ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability.

ICLEI USA was launched in 1995 and has grown from a handful of local governments participating in a pilot project to a solid network of more than 600 cities, towns and counties actively striving to achieve tangible reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and create more sustainable communities. ICLEI USA is the domestic leader on climate protection and adaptation, and sustainable development at the local government level.

The CNY RPDB Energy Management program will utilize ICLEI membership to enhance its service delivery to municipal governments by engaging in climate action planning and sustainability planning at the local and regional scales. The CNY RPDB energy management program has worked with municipalities throughout its five county territory to improve municipal energy management practices, develop clean energy projects, and deliver public education programming to municipal constituencies.

The CNY RPDB is a public agency that was established in 1966 by Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, Onondaga, and Oswego Counties under the provisions of Article 12B of the New York State General Municipal Law.

The CNY RPDB is governed by a board of directors that is appointed by its five member counties. Financial support for the agency is provided by member county contributions, state and federal grants, and contract service revenue. The CNY RPDB provides a comprehensive range of services associated with the growth and development of communities in Central New York through Comprehensive Planning, Economic Development, Energy Management, Environmental Management, Information and Research Services, Intergovernmental Cooperation, and Transportation Planning.
