Cyber Warfare in the Asia Pacific: How Can Asian Militaries

August 11, 2010, Malaysia - In modern warfare, cyber security is fast-becoming top priority for militaries around the world as they work to ensure their country is as possibly prepared against a cyber attack that can debilitate their entire infrastructure. However, although focus on strengthening cyber capabilities has increased, the rapid pace of developments in cyber warfare have left many Asian militaries struggling to maintain an edge against this potential threat.

So how can forces in the Asia Pacific strengthen cyber capabilities, structure response to cyber threats and tackle challenges with network protection?

This will be the focal point of discussion at Defence IQ’s Cyber Warfare Asia Pacific conference (www.cyberwarfareasia.com), taking place October 27-28, 2010 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre in Malaysia.

Chief Technologist for the US Cyber Consequences Unit, John Bumgarner, commented in a recent Defence IQ interview: “Understanding the geopolitical issues of the cyber defence revolution is critical to every nation’s security, stability and prosperity in the 21st century.”

This implication of the nuances and delicate intricacies of cyber warfare is not overlooked by other militaries. With a parallel message, the Cyber Warfare Asia Pacific conference will be opened by a keynote address from Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, the Minister of Defence of Malaysia, who will discuss the importance of cyber capabilities to the Malaysian government, followed by sessions from:

• Lt Gen Dato Zulkefli Zainal Abidin, Deputy Chief, Malaysian Army
• Lt Col Husin Jazri (Retired), CEO, CyberSecurity Malaysia
• Associate Professor Ahmad Ghazali Abu Hassan, Director of Center for Strategic & International Security, University of National Defence Malaysia
• Dr. Yono Reksoprodjo, Asymmetric Warfare Advisor to the Commander in Chief of the Indonesian Military Forces
• Colonel Charles Williamson, Deputy Staff Judge Advocate, Headquarters US Air Force in Europe
• John Bumgarner, Chief Technologist, US Cyber Consequences Unit

Attendees can learn lessons and understand how other militaries are upgrading their own cyber assets with sessions on topics including:
• Challenges Malaysian militaries are faced with in developing cyber capabilities
• Computer Network Operations requirements and their importance in the future
• Cyber Security strategies in a new threat environment
• Policy voids of Cyber Warfare and international law
• Indonesia, Belgium and Chinese perspectives and/or capabilities

The conference runs in alliance with CyberSecurity Malaysia, the national governmental body responsible for cyber strategy in Malaysia, and the CyberSecurity Malaysia’s Awards, Conference and Exhibition 2010.
