Press release
Adam Caller, founder of private tuition company Tutors International, issues apology to the Tutor Pages
Adam Caller, founder of the leading global private tuition provider Tutors International, has issued an apology to Henry Fagg of The Tutor Pages for the statement that the private tutor website is a disreputable source. In response to complaints from The Tutor Pages, Mr Caller spoke at length with Mr Fagg, and was convinced that his website is not running disreputable service. Mr Caller apologized personally for having caused offence and has issued the following statement. For more information, visit www.tutors-international.com or call +44 (0) 1865 435 135."I regret the offense caused by my previous press release, and have come to the conclusion, having spoken to Henry, that he does not run a disreputable website. Quite to the contrary, the information provided on The Tutor Pages website is presented in accordance with the law as it currently stands," said Adam. "At present, all responsibility lies with parents to ensure that the private tutor they employ is safe to work within their household, including extensive contact with their children. The Tutor Pages states on the website FAQ that just as a newspaper is not responsible for checking the credentials of its advertisers, The Tutor Pages is not responsible for verifying the accuracy of the information posted by individual private tutors," Adam explained. "In line with the standard set by law, it advises parents to take sensible precautions when employing a tutor."
"However, whilst I appreciate that The Tutor Pages is not obligated to check its tutor information by law, Henry and I disagree with regards to the moral obligation that such an introductory role places upon an organisation," Adam continued. "At Tutors International, we believe that any entity introducing a tutor to a family, be it a friend, agency, website or organisation such as Tutors International, has a moral responsibility prior to giving that advice to do more than the legal requirement. By introducing the tutor, that entity is giving the tutor credibility, and whilst parents and families do their best, they simply aren't skilled in verifying the claims made by a candidate to the level required to ensure their family's safety."
When asked what Tutors International does to fulfill this moral obligation, Adam replied; "We go to the most extraordinary lengths to verify a tutor's background. We write to three referees and independently verify that the referees are indeed who they claim to be. We renew the tutor's ECRB check and then refer their details to Kroll who carry out a background check tailored to our needs. Once all of the information is available, of course it is ultimately up to the parents to decide which tutor they wish to employ," Adam added, "but we see that as the last responsibility, as opposed to the law which sees that decision as the parent's responsibility from first contact through to employment."
"I singled out The Tutor Pages and I apologise for doing so, as they are complying with the law," Adam concluded. "My belief that the law is woefully inadequate in this regard is separate to the reputability of The Tutor pages website."
