EV Charging Stations as Smart Metering Solutions

07-01-2010 03:09 PM CET | Energy & Environment

Press release from: Greenlots

Smart metering, the remote monitoring of electricity meters via a communications network, is of significant interest to public utilities and power producers who seek to level the grid load over the course of the day. Through smart monitoring of electricity consumption by consumers, utilities can reduce peak loads and achieve better efficiency. This can also help consumers save on electricity costs when charging electric vehicles at non-peak hours, particularly at night when there is an excess of power.
The budding development of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles provides a useful application for smart metering. If present in charging infrastructure technology, smart metering can transfer the load of electric vehicles to times of day with overproduction of power and relatively lower price per kilowatt hour. In the future, batteries of electric vehicles can be used as buffers, not only to serve as a storage device, but also to feed electricity back into the grid during times of peak load.
"Smart-metering capable charging systems for electric vehicles consist of both hardware as well as critically important, intelligent software to control charging behavior," said Christoph Frank, vice president of sales for Greenlots® Europe. Greenlots provides charging devices which can be remotely monitored and controlled through Internet-based software called Greenlots Sky®. Network operators of charging devices can adjust parameters for individual stations or for their entire network quickly and easily. It is likely that 80 to 90 percent of charging will be done at home or office given that cars spend the majority of time parked at these locations. With smart-metering enabled systems, the charging infrastructure will be prepared for all future demand response requirements and control by utilities and consumers. "For a fast and scalable roll-out of charging devices, systems have to be affordable. We offer our complete hardware and software solutions below 2,000 EUR which fulfill all requirements for charging of electric vehicles," said Christoph Frank. Greenlots charging devices are already used in the Asia Pacific and comply with IEC 61 581 international standard.

Greenlots® is a Singapore based company that designs and delivers charging networks for electric vehicles. Our aim is to offer a web-based charging network for every city, which is easy to use and inexpensive to set up. We’ve designed Greenlots® charging devices to be:
affordable | easy to install | convenient to use | networked solutions | global

Marketed under the trademark, Greenlots®, the solutions offer a platform for utilities, municipalities, car park operators, EV manufacturers and distributors and others the opportunity to install, own and operate their own local charging network for electric vehicles.

Greenlots®solutions are based on usage patterns of electric vehicle drivers and tap into the existing grid infrastructure of the city. This makes Greenlots®solutions highly convenient and affordable for network operators and simultaneously accessible for drivers of electric vehicles. Greenlots®solutions allow network operators to utilize existing electricity and parking infrastructure with limited additional cost to operate a commercial network of charging points. The modular design allows network operators to scale-up their networks according to the deployment of EVs in a city. Greenlots®networks are managed and monitored via a web-based platform. Greenlots® provides the tools and services to make the lives of network operators easier.
