Press release from: CERESANA

Market Study: Titanium Dioxide (3rd edition)

Market Study: Titanium Dioxide (3rd edition)

The market research company Ceresana analyzed the global market for titanium dioxide (TiO2) along its whole value-added chain already for the third time. The most important natural resources for titanium dioxide are the minerals ilmenite and rutile. Ilmenite producers gain it from ore deposits or from sand that contains heavy metals. Natural rutile is formed primarily by the crystallization of magma with high titanium and low iron contents or by the metamorphosis of titanium-bearing sediments or magmatites. Synthetic rutile and titanium slag are made from ilmenite.

Titanium Dioxide Uses

In 2017, 15 million tonnes of ilmenite, rutile, and titanium slag were processed worldwide. 60% thereof were utilized for the production of pigments. For other end products, such as technically pure titanium, electrical conductors, and chemical intermediates, 7% were utilized. The rest, 33% were used for further refinement into synthetic rutile and titanium slag.

Titanium Dioxide Pigments
While only a few countries dominate the market for these feedstocks, the processors in Asia-Pacific, North America, and Western Europe determine the demand. The TiO2 market report analyzes the market for TiO2 pigments. Asia-Pacific accounted for 46% of global demand in 2017. The most important sales markets for TiO2 pigments are paints & coatings with a share of 56%, followed by plastics, paper, and others.

The Study in Brief:

Chapter 1 analyzes the market for TiO2 feedstock: from the naturally occurring raw materials ilmenite and rutile to the intermediates titanium slag and synthetic rutile up to their applications. Information is given on revenues, capacities, trade, and production per product type. Furthermore, feedstock demand is split by the segments pigment production, other uses, and the volume processed into intermediates such as titanium slag and synthetic rutile.
Chapter 2 deals with the most important TiO2 market: pigments. Data are given on development of revenues, demand, and products – including forecasts up to 2025.
In chapter 3, information on the market for TiO2 pigments is provided for 15 countries. Besides import, export, supply, and demand, utilization of pigments in the respective sales markets is analyzed as well.
Chapter 4 examines the applications of TiO2 pigments: paints & coatings, paper, plastics, and others. The several sales markets are thoroughly examined – split by Western & Eastern Europe, North & South America, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East / Africa. The largest countries are analyzed individually.
Chapter 5 provides profiles of the largest manufacturers of TiO2 pigments as well as of the producers of ilmenite, natural and synthetic rutile, and titanium slag. Extensive profiles of 73 producers are given, including Chemours, Iluka, Group DF, Kenmare, Kronos, Rio Tinto, Tronox, TiZir, and Venator.

Colorful world market: current Ceresana study on pigments
Around the world, green is considered the color of new beginnings, of growth, of life. However, finding truly "green" pigments is a challenge: cadmium, cobalt, copper and other heavy metals can be dangerous, while natural earth colors are less durable and more difficult to process. Nevertheless, the outlook for manufacturers and distributors of these small, coloring particles is predominantly positive: global demand for pigments will increase to around 14.5 million
Biobased insulation materials: Ceresana gives an optimistic outlook for the Euro …
Granulated cork, mats made from hemp, fleeces made from sheep's wool or even blown-in cellulose flakes: Biobased insulation materials are increasingly competing with mineral wool and plastic foam. Ceresana has been analyzing the market for insulation materials used for thermal insulation in the construction industry for 10 years. Now, for the first time, the market research institute is publishing a study specifically on the European market for insulation materials made
Sustainable adhesion: Ceresana report on biobased adhesives
Adhesives make many environmentally friendly products possible: lightweight car bodies and batteries for electromobility, insulation glazing for facades and insulating panels as well as corrugated cardboard packaging or simple paper bags. Increasingly, however, not only the end products but also the adhesives themselves are to be "organic" - in fact, more than 13 million tonnes are already produced around the world each year, and this figure is rising. So far,
Tear-resistant and flexible: Ceresana examines the world market for plastic film …
Stretching towards success: Plastic films get stronger and more transparent if they are stretched longitudinally and crosswise during production. The "biaxially oriented" plastics polypropylene (BOPP), polyethylene (BOPE) and polyester (BOPET) are processed into packaging, bags and sacks, shrink and stretch films, but also, for example, agricultural films, insulation material and industrial films. According to the latest Ceresana study on the global market for flexible plastic films, which is already the
