Howard University and Calabasas High Alum, Hari Williams, "Educating" Us In New Movie
Calabasas, CA (June 2010) –Howard University and Calabasas High School alumni, Hari Williams, is seeing his script come to life. Written by Williams shortly after he graduated from HU in 2006, “Douglass U” is an urban comedy about a young man’s unexpected freshman experience at one of the country’s (fictitious) premiere Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).Williams received a BFA in Theater from Howard University's College of Fine Arts in 2006. He has appeared in several stage, film and television productions including "Studio", "My Letter to Hip Hop", "Wrath of Cain" (which is due out later this year and stars Ving Rhames) and the critically acclaimed stage play, "The Peacock Men". In addition to being a writer, actor and film producer, Williams has also produced a successful play in Los Angeles, "Who is Curtis Lee?," and the brand new webseries "Howton U."
"Douglass U" begins at the end of Williams’ character’s (“Aaron”) senior year at an all white high school. Wanting a more “black experience,” and against the approval of his Ivy League educated father, Aaron decides (after quickly reviewing a brochure and promotional DVD received in the mail) that Douglass University is the place for him. Little does he realize that his “experience” would be much more than what the school’s brochure and DVD presented.
The film begins principal photography on July 31st in Los Angeles, and co-stars Catfish Jean ("Out of Time", "Bad Boys 2"), Johnny Soto ("Ocean's 13", "Zoey 101") and fellow HU College of Fine Arts' alum, Ashford J. Thomas ("Prince Among Slaves").
“It's exciting to see something you've worked on for a couple of years come to life,” said Williams. “While some of it is very similar to my personal experiences, even my life at Howard wasn't this funny.”
"Douglass U" is being produced by I Will Make You A Star Productions, LLC and Thought Collective Productions. Williams, Charles Belk and Wiley B. Oscar will serve as the film's producers.
The movie's premiere is targeted for October 31st, in Washington, DC during the 2010 Howard University homecoming weekend.
Williams is the son of Calabasas, California residents, Madhavi and Leroy Williams.
