Jute Imports

The imports totaled 281K tonnes in 2017, going down by -4.2% against the previous year figure. In general, jute imports continue to indicate a drastic decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2011, an increase of 31% against the previous year level. In that year, jute imports attained its maximum volume of 513K tonnes. From 2012 to 2017, growth of jute imports stood at a somewhat lower level.

In value terms, jute imports amounted to $208M in 2017. Overall, it indicated a mild growth from 2007 to 2017: the total imports value decreased at an average annual rate of -5.3% over the last ten years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2017, jute imports increased by +18.3% against its level of 2014. Over the period under review, jute imports reached its maximum level of $346M in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2017, it stood at a somewhat lower level.

Jute Imports By Country

Pakistan (78K tonnes), and India (66K tonnes) represented the main importers of jute in 2017, recording approx. 28%, and 23% of total imports, respectively. Nepal (38K tonnes) ranks second in terms of the global imports with a 13% share, followed by China (11%). Germany (7.6K tonnes), Cte d'Ivoire (5.9K tonnes), the UK (5.5K tonnes), South Korea (5.2K tonnes), and Russia (4.6K tonnes) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by Germany (+9.1% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest jute markets worldwide were Pakistan ($49M), India ($45M), and Nepal ($22M), together accounting for 56% of global imports.

Nepal (+14.1% per year) experienced the highest rates of growth with regard to the imports, in terms of the main importing countries, over the last 10 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Jute Import Prices By Country

In 2017, the average import price for jute amounted to $742 per tonne, dropping by -10.9% against the previous year. Overall, it indicated a strong increase from 2007 to 2017: the import price increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% over the last ten years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2017, jute import price increased by +36.7% against its level of 2012. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, an increase of 42% against the previous year level. Global import price peaked of $832 per tonne in 2016, falling back in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2017, the country with the highest import price was the UK ($1,130 per tonne), while Nepal ($592 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of import prices was attained by Nepal (+11.2% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
