Celebrations Galore at Banasthali Mamooth Gathering for Ganesh Chaturthi 2018

Lord Ganesh is considered to be the God of wealth, knowledge, wisdom and prosperity. The essence of this festival lies in the fact that the devotees worship Ganesh to free their lives of all the sins and substitute them with knowledge and action. Associated with Lord Ganpati or Ganesha - the most loved god who has 108 names Ganesh Chaturthi, popularly called ‘Ganesh Puja’ or ‘Vinayak Chaturthi’ is a Hindu festival which falls in the vedic month of Bhadra (mid August-September). Ganesh is also called ‘Vighnaharta’ as he is known to take away all the problems of his devotees. It is a matter of pride that today Ganesh Chaturthi is not only celebrated in India but in several countries like Japan, Tibet, China, Cambodia, Thailand etc in different names.

Appreciated by the world at large, Banasthali firmly believes that to be top ranking, it is the foremost responsibility of any Indian educational institution to nurture humans with the tolerant and harmonious view of life as envisaged in the Indian culture the spirit of which has been beautifully captured in the Indian Constitution by the founding fathers of the nation. The Panchmukhi Shiksha – the fivefold education evolved over decades at Banasthali attempts a balance of the five aspects of education, namely Physical, Practical, Aesthetic, Moral and Intellectual and aims at all round harmonious development of personality. The mission and vision of Banasthali includes synthesis of spiritual values and scientific achievements of the East and the West.

To reinforce the fivefold education, Banasthali has established a rich tradition of celebrating various days of national and international significance throughout the year. Shaheed Diwas, Independence day, Gandhi Jayanti and Republic day celebrations aim to instill a feeling of patriotism and nationalism so that nation above all always stays on top of all Banasthalites. With students coming from different parts of India, the 850 acre Banasthali campus itself is a mini India echoing the lines of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore in National anthem “Panjaba-Sindhu-Gujarata-Maratha Dravida-Utkala-Banga.”

The rich ethnic diversity of India truly comes alive when the campus celebrates Hariyali Teej, Janmasthami, Ganesh Chaturthi, Navratra Dandiya & Garba, Durgasthami, Dusshera, Diwali, Guru Nanak Jayanti, Eid al Fitr, Christmas, Lohri, Basant Panchami and Holi. During these celebrations, the students and faculty of Banasthali add a spectrum of colours and gaiety to campus life and indeed rise above caste and creed and develop mutual respect for all religions.

In addition to being an auspicious religious festival, Ganesh Chaturthi has deep cultural significance too. It is a time for various colourful activities like singing, dancing and performing plays depicting the birth of Ganesha and enactment of the various legends associated with him. On the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi 13 Sep 2018, entire Banasthali community comes together to the pandal in front of Vani Mandir where a huge idol of Lord Ganesh is installed to celebrate this festival with pomp, grandeur and fanfare. After the Poojan performance by Vice Chancellor Prof Aditya Shastri, Banasthali choir rendered several bhajans both in Dhrupad and Khayal devoted to Lord Ganesha. The celebrations concluded with Arti.

The students and faculty who attended the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations left with beaming faces and pride that they were indeed part of a top ranking institution which is a jewel in the crown among the women's universities not only in India today but across the globe.
