Date Imports

In 2017, the amount of dates imported worldwide amounted to 1.2M tonnes, increasing by 3% against the previous year figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2007 to 2017; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014, when it surged by 12% year-to-year. Over the period under review, date imports attained its maximum volume in 2017, and are expected to retain its growth in the near future.

In value terms, date imports amounted to $1.4B in 2017. Overall, date imports continue to indicate a prominent increase. Global import peaked in 2017, and are likely to continue its growth in the near future.

Date Imports By Country

In 2017, India (374K tonnes), distantly followed by the United Arab Emirates (212K tonnes) represented the key importers of dates, together constituting 49% of total imports. Bangladesh (39K tonnes), France (37K tonnes), Yemen (37K tonnes), Indonesia (35K tonnes), Turkey (34K tonnes), Morocco (32K tonnes), Malaysia (26K tonnes), Kazakhstan (26K tonnes), the UK (22K tonnes), and Russia (21K tonnes) occupied the weak share of total imports.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by Kazakhstan (+26.9% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest date markets worldwide were India ($243M), the United Arab Emirates ($129M), and France ($88M), with a combined 33% share of global imports. These countries were followed by Morocco, the UK, Malaysia, Indonesia, Turkey, Russia, Yemen, Bangladesh and Kazakhstan, which together accounted for a further 25%.

Kazakhstan (+27.5% per year) recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the imports, among the main importing countries, over the last 10 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Date Import Prices By Country

In 2017, the average import price for dates amounted to $1,177 per tonne, rising by 8% against the previous year. Overall, it indicated a remarkable increase from 2007 to 2017: the import price increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last ten years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. Based on the result of 2017, date import price increased by +70.6% against its level of 2007. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, when import price increased by 18% against the previous year level. Over the period under review, average import price for date reached its maximum level in 2017, and is expected to retain its growth in the near future.

Import prices varied noticeably by country of destination; the country with the highest import price was the UK ($2,653 per tonne), while Kazakhstan ($309 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of import prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+9.3% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
