WCD's Inaugural Mentored Choreographic Workshop

(Manitoba) Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers (WCD) newest initiative is a special look into the inner workings of dance creation. WCD Artistic Director Brent Lott will be guided by nationally acclaimed mentor and choreographer, Davida Monk in the creation of a new work for performers Johanna Riley, Sara Roche, Kyla Wallace and Branwyn Bundon.

See how the choreographer responds to the input of his mentor and the audience, how the work evolves under this guidance and how the choreographer interprets these influences. The audience for this workshop will have a unique opportunity to become a vital and relevant part of the creative process. A chance to connect directly to the work and a learning experience for anyone interested in dance. This workshop consists of 2 parts; both are presentations of the work in progress.

1st Draft - November 29th Showing - A preview of the unfinished work and the first opportunity for audience members to witness and contribute to the creative process.

2nd Draft - Dec 8th and 9th Showing - The final showings of the work at this stage of its evolution. See how your input and a week of further development will resonate on the second draft.

Ticket pricing:

1st Draft - $5 for the November 29th single performance.

2nd Draft - $10 for your choice of either the December 8th or the 9th performance
of the work in progress.

Davida Monk is the Artistic Director of Calary’s m-body. Monk has taught most notably at Le Groupe Dance Lab, Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers, The Dance Collective, School of the Alberta Ballet, Grant MacEwan College, York University, University of Regina, New Dance Horizons, Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, and at the Dance Centre and MainDance in Vancouver. In 1996 Monk began teaching in the Faculty of Fine Arts Program of Dance at the University of Calgary.

Monk has been the recipient of awards for choreographic development from the Canada Council for the Arts, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, from the Calgary Regional Arts Foundation and The Banff Centre.

Brent Lott is WCD Artistic Director and the choreographer of this workshop. Brent received his early training at the professional programs of both the Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) and The School of Contemporary Dancers (SCD). As a choreographer, Brent has been actively creating for over a decade.

As a guest teacher Brent has taught at numerous university and professional training programs across Canada and is a member of the faculty of the Professional Program of SCD and a past faculty member of the Professional Program of RWB. Brent is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Dancer Transition Resource Centre, a national organization whose mandate is to help dancers make the necessary transitions into, within, and from professional performing careers.


Since 1964 Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers creates, produces, teaches, presents, and promotes professional contemporary dance with a view to furthering the art form for professional artists and audiences alike. All WCD performances this season take place in the WCD Studio Theatre, second floor, 211 Bannatyne Avenue in Winnipeg’s historic Exchange District.
