WCD in the black again

WCD posts another surplus and adds 3 new board members during the 2007 WCD Annual General Meeting

(Winnipeg) - Board president Lisa Stiver stated that “it has been another successful year” at the annual general meeting of Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers (WCD) held November 13th in Winnipeg. “For those of us who have watched WCD go through permutations in its administrative structure and its artistic leadership, it is indeed a proud time.”

All in attendance were delighted to hear from General Manager Kathy Fenton that for the second year in a row WCD had posted a surplus. For the period ending May 31, 2006 WCD posted a surplus of $18,700, against a total operating budget of $395,000, reducing the total deficit to $76,700. The WCD deficit was incurred largely as a result of the purchase of its new studio/theatre space in the Crocus building. WCD moved to the new facilities in 2002 along with other members of the Arts in the Exchange Consortium. Ownership of its principal performance and rehearsal venue has provided WCD with a solid base from which to grow.

WCD Artistic Director Brent Lott presented a detailed review of the 2005-2006 season and the many successes of both the performance and fundraising events. His report ended with the highlights of the final show of the 05/06 season, In a Different Light, choreographed by former Winnipegger Sharon Moore. The performance explored the theme of humanity on display as the audience interacted with musicians and dancers in a “walkabout” through the Exchange District. In a Different Light was a success on many levels for WCD with sell-out audiences raving about the experience.

3 new board members were added at the AGM. Aileen Hunt, Development Manager at the Manitoba Theatre Centre, Brenda Boughton, Associate Manager, Communications at Investors Group and Lindsay Stewart Glor, Editor of Winnipeg Women Magazine joined the existing board consisting of Lisa Stiver, Robert Tinker, Mary Reid, Cyndi Forcand, Ellen Oberlander, Ruth Zetner, Paula Blair and WCD founder Rachel Browne. These new members bring additional strength to WCD fundraising efforts and increase the breadth of experience shared by the board.
