1-Hexene Market Overview
1-hexene is an essential component used in the production of polyethylene, a plastic resin generally converted into a film, plastic tubes, milk containers, detergent bottles and containers for food and beverages. Demand from end-user industries will contribute to the US market demand for 1-hexene. It is generally manufactured by two routes, full-range processes by ethylene oligomerization and special-purpose technology. Dehydration of hexanol is a minor route of 1-hexene, used commercially at smaller scales. Prior to the 1970s, 1-hexene was also manufactured by thermal cracking of waxes. Linear internal hexenes were made by chlorination/dehydrochlorination of linear kinds of paraffin.

The "ethylene oligomerization" combines ethylene molecules to produce linear alpha-olefins of different chain lengths with an even number of carbon atoms. This approach results in a distribution or "full range" of alpha-olefins. The superior Shell Olefins Process (SHOP) uses this approach. Linde and SABIC developed α-SABLIN technology using ethylene oligomerization to produce 21% 1-hexene. CP Chemicals and Innovene also have complete processes. In general, the content of 1-hexene varies around twenty per cent in the Ethyl process (Innovene), while only twelve per cent of the distribution in the processes of CP Chemicals and Idemitsu.

In 2003, Chevron-Phillips commissioned a specific route to 1-hexene in Qatar using ethylene trimerization. A second plant was scheduled to start in 2011 in Saudi Arabia and a third in 2014 in the United States. The Sasol process is also considered a route to use 1-hexene. Sasol uses the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis to produce fuels from coal synthesis gas. The synthesis recovers 1-hexene from the aforementioned fuel streams, the initial concentration of 1-hexene can be reduced by 60% in a narrow distillation, the rest vinylids, linear and branched internal olefins, linear and branched paraffins, carboxylic acids and aromatic compounds. The trimerization of ethylene has been demonstrated by homogeneous catalysts. Another route was reported by Lummus Technology.

The increasing applications of the product coupled with the rising investments by the end-user industries is expected to compel the market for 1-Hexene in the coming years.
