Recently it has been suggested that common genetic variants influence the risk of glioma, but this should be confirmed, although the prevalence of these variants in different populations of the world is unknown. In addition to genetic risk factors, it is known that exposure to ionizing radiation increases the risk, while allergic conditions seem to reduce the risk. Exposure to non-ionizing radiation, especially radiofrequency fields from mobile phones but also low-frequency fields, infections with some viruses, use of hormonal contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy, statins, vitamin D level, alcohol, height, BMI, and occupational exposures have been investigated, but no firm conclusions can be drawn at present. The trends were similar between the sexes, although downward trends were observed for men and women in Japan and New Zealand. Rising trends were observed in both genders in Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Slovenia, the Russian Federation, Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Singapore, and Thailand; in the remaining countries, rates tended to be relatively stable over the last decade.
