Dr. F. Stuart Gulley to Serve as Keynote Speaker at Reinhardt College’s 2010 Commencement Ceremony6
Dr. F. Stuart Gulley is the Keynote Speaker for Reinhardt College’s commencement ceremony on May 1, 2010. An ordained United Methodist minister, Gulley is a well-known and dedicated leader in education and his community.“Dr. Gulley is a leader in education in Georgia,” said Dr. J. Thomas Isherwood, Reinhardt president. “As the current president of Woodward Academy and the past president of LaGrange College, Dr. Gulley has consistently demonstrated his commitment to quality education and the integration of faith and learning. He leads by example and represents the best in leadership that transforms lives. It is so fitting that he address the last graduating class of Reinhardt College and welcome the arrival of Reinhardt University.”
Gulley serves as the seventh president of Woodward Academy, the largest college-preparatory school in the Continental U.S., with 2,800 students. He also currently serves as an Elder for The United Methodist Church North Georgia Conference, Atlanta-College Park District under special appointment to Woodward Academy. Previously, he served as president of LaGrange College in LaGrange, Georgia, for 13 years. Prior to joining LaGrange College, Gulley served for ten years in several administrative capacities at Emory University, including the position of Associate Vice President for University Development and Church Relations.
He received his undergraduate training at Vanderbilt University, his Master of Divinity degree from Emory University, and his Ph.D. from Georgia State University. His current education affiliations include serving since 2002 as a member of the University Senate for The United Methodist Church and serving since 2004 as a chair of the Institutional Review Committee.
Gulley’s research interests include the moral dimensions of leadership. He has written more than 30 articles on topics from “Why state should pay more for private college students,” to “A community leads by serving.” His latest work, a book published by Mercer University Press, is titled: The Academic President as Moral Leader: James T. Laney at Emory University, 1977-1993.
Honored many times for his leadership in education and the community, Gulley received the Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from LaGrange College; the Shining Light Award from the City Council of LaGrange; the Paul Thiele Leadership Award from the Georgia Foundation for Independent Colleges; the Francis Asbury Award, Georgia Commission on United Methodist Higher Education; and the Frank Tigner Award from the LaGrange Lion’s Club, all in 2009. He received the Candler School of Theology’s Alumni Service Award in 1997 and the G. Ray Jordan Award in 1986. Gulley was recognized as one of the “Forty Under 40 – 1997 Rising Stars in Georgia Business, Politics and Academics,” by Georgia Trend magazine in 1997. He is also a member of the 1998 and 2010 classes of Leadership Atlanta.
Gulley resides in College Park, Ga. with his wife, Kathleen, and two sons, Andrew (14) and Matthew (11).
As of June 1, 2010, Reinhardt College will take on a new name – Reinhardt University. Since 1883, Reinhardt has focused on being “the way college should be,” and although the name will change, Reinhardt will remain true to its values as a private liberal arts institution affiliated with The United Methodist Church which offers a caring learning environment dedicated to meeting each student’s needs.
More than 1,100 students are enrolled in Reinhardt’s three graduate programs in business administration, music and education, and 40 undergraduate degree programs, which range from business, communications and education to psychology, music and math. Reinhardt has two locations- a residential campus in Cherokee County in Waleska, Ga., just 45 minutes northwest of Atlanta, and center focused on adults in Alpharetta, Ga. It also is offers selected programs in Epworth, Cartersville and Marietta, Ga.
Additional attractions on the Waleska campus include the Falany Performing Arts Center, the Funk Heritage Center and the Fincher Visual Arts Center.
