Press release from: The Law Offices of John David Hart

FORT WORTH – Life-threatening problems and complications among women using the Ortho Evra birth control patch continue, as demonstrated by the latest lawsuits filed against the drug’s manufacturer, Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical Inc., a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ).

The lawsuits claim more than 40 women using the Ortho Evra patch have experienced health problems, including blood clots and other difficulties. One case filed this week reports that a woman using Ortho Evra died.

“We were saddened for these women and their families but not surprised by the news of these cases,” says John David Hart, of the Law Offices of John David Hart in Fort Worth, who represents women who have used the Ortho Evra patch. “All of the women we’ve met with and all of the research we’ve done suggest that this is a real problem and that women are being harmed by using this drug.”

Ortho Evra is a patch that prevents pregnancy by delivering the hormones estrogen and progestin through the skin. In September, the FDA approved new label information for Ortho Evra, following a study that showed women using the patch were twice as likely to experience blood clots as were those who used a traditional contraceptive pill. The FDA has called for additional testing.

Mr. Hart represents a group of women who have suffered serious health problems as a result of their use of Ortho Evra. One client developed potentially life-threatening blood clots in her lungs and suffered a miscarriage after using the Ortho Evra patch. Her claim is currently pending in federal court in Marshall, Texas.
