Europe supports Taiwan’s participation in international organizations

Press release from: Presseabteilung Taipeh Vertretung

The European Parliament expressed that it “strongly supports” Taiwan’s participation as an observer in international organizations and activities such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This statement is part of a resolution on important global issues passed by the legislative body in an overwhelming vote on March 10.

In the resolution, the European Parliament states that it “welcomes the efforts undertaken by both Taipei and Beijing to improve cross-strait relations, which help to reinforce stability and security in East Asia, and encourages both sides to further enhance dialogue, practical cooperation and confidence-building; commends the [EU] Council’s declaration of 8 May 2009, which reiterates its support for Taiwan’s participation in the WHO; strongly supports Taiwan’s participation as an observer in relevant international organisations and activities, such as ICAO and UNFCCC, where Taiwan’s participation is important to the EU and global interests.”

Since the improvement in cross-strait relations and Taiwan’s implementation of the “flexible diplomacy” policy, the European Parliament has passed several resolutions in support of Taiwan’s observership in relevant international organizations. This indicates that Taiwan’s cross-strait and foreign policies have been welcomed by European nations, and that the people of the EU are deeply concerned for the development of relations between Taiwan and mainland China.
