What’s the big deal? It seems innocent right?

Afterall, it’s just a group of teenage boys making a friendly bet on their favourite sports team during the world cup, or a group of friends are enjoying the poker during the festival.

But these activities aren’t harmless. Researchers have constantly cautious that teens gamble for all sort of reasons – entertainment, challenge, pride, fun, to win money, or to impress their friends. They highlighted that many problem gamblers often had an early gambling experience, in many case with respected adult or their parents and friends, or have issues with self-control.

A national study, published by Singapore Medical Journal, found that more than 30% of problem gamblers seeking treatment were posed to gambling before they turned 18.

Just like 19-year-old David (not his real name), shared that he was deeply influenced by his family when he was young.

“I was only 7 years old when I first played poker with my cousins during the Chinese New Year festival.”

“From time to time, I have played some friendly poker or mah-jong game with friends for entertainment. Sometime I win, sometime I loss. But it was small amount and harmless. I always enjoyed it.”

It was these “harmless games” turned him to progress to online gambling and betting on football 2 years ago – started small until he eventually racked up almost $25,000 in debts.

He then turned to loan sharks to feed his habits; and when can no longer repay his debts, he turned to become a runner for the loan shark.
David was caught when he was a runner and was sentenced to jail. He was only 19 years old then.

“David’s case wasn’t unusual in Singapore. We have learnt many cases like this since we started to partner with NCPG a year ago. Last year, we partnered the council to create an outreach campaign to create awareness among students in all the ITEs, Polytechnics and Universities in Singapore, discouraging them from gambling and highlight the harmful impact. It was a great success among students. We are excited to partner NCPG for another campaign for the second year to promote this very important message.” Joelle Goh, Director of Cups Media, shared.

Joyce, campaign manager of Cups Media, added, “We have an exclusive distribution network with over 250 schools in Singapore through our free cups advertising channel. They see and hold and touch the outreach message through our quality paper cups. Our team is very excited to partner the council again to leverage on our media platforms for National Council on Problem Gambling to promote their message to students and teenagers, and helping them to understand the importance.”

“Close to 900 students responded to our surveys during the 2 month marketing campaign. We are encouraged to see 80% of the participants recalled the advertisements on our paper cups and more than 70% citing that paper cups advertising is a “highly” effective way to educate the youths of problem gambling.”

Joelle added, “After all, this message is so important to the youths, and we are all very glad that we can make use of our distribution channel and environmentally friendly advertising cups to help them to create a high engagement with thousands of their target audience in schools.”
