Spire holds seminar for Japanese firms on Indian e-commerce

On 17 July 2018, Spire Research and Consulting organized a seminar with the Yamada Consulting Group (YCG) and Uzabase Inc (owners of the SPEEDA platform). The target audience was Japanese companies in Singapore. Saurabh Sharma (Country Director of Spire India), Eiji Asano (Head of YCG Vietnam) and Rahul Saigal (a senior executive at an Indian marketing agency), shared their insights on India’s economy and consumer behavior trends.

The speakers discussed changes in India’s consumer spending and the emergence of massive e-commerce platforms for shopping.

India is home to six megacities, 20 international airports and 40 cities similar or larger than Japan’s Osaka city. Moreover, the majority of India’s exports (USD49 billion) and imports (USD26 billion) are to the United States, meaning that trade with Japan has a lot of room to grow. India has a population of over 382 million in just Tier-1 cities. India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by close to 8% in 2017.

Acceptance of e-commerce platforms is rising fast. In 2017, 48% of India’s population was using e-commerce channels, thanks to the country’s growing middle class and the rise of social media.

34% of Indians spend money on eating better, followed by 20% spending on better homes.
