To commemorate the birth anniversary of 'The Wizard', hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, India today celebrates as National Sports Day. This year it is special as India is winning huge number of medals in the ongoing Asian Games at Jakarta Palembang.

Dhyan Chand is the legendary hockey player who won gold medals in Olympics for India in the years 1928, 1932 and 1936. He scored over 400 goals in his career from 1926 to 1948. Also India confers Lifetime achievement award in any sports in the name of Dhyan Chand.

In a way every day is Sports Day at Banasthali and various events are held throughout the year. The morning fitness program held every day includes Yoga asanas, Martial Arts, Conditioning and Fitness exercises, and Aerobics. The daily evening program which includes match practice for various games like Basketball, Volleyball, Athletics, Hockey, Football, Tennis, Martial Arts, Kho - Kho, Kabaddi, Handball, Netball, Softball, Archery, Cricket & Swimming (Seasonal) prepares the students for intramural as well as extramural competitions.

Inter-faculty / Inter house competitions are few of the important events in the intramural programme. With 16000 students, at Banasthali which is world’s largest fully residential women’s university, intramural sports is not a weeklong or fortnight activity but is a yearlong activity.

To mark National Sports Day, Prof Usha Tiwari of Banasthali gave a talk on 29 Aug 2018 at Vigyan Mandir on “Yoga to battle the problems of modern life”. Born 04 Sep 1973, She did her Bachelors degree in Physical Education (BPE) from Jiwaji University Gwalior and masters MPE from LNIPE Gwalior and PhD from Banasthali and her Research was on “Influence of Socio Economic Status of Parents on Health Related Physical Fitness of their Daughters”. She has published 4 Books and one of them is on Ashok Kumar A Legendary Hockey Player who is also son of Dhyan Chand.

She has been With Banasthali as faculty from 1997 a marathon 21 years. She has till date to her credit 23 International & 8 National Publication apart from Countless seminars and Conferences. Her sports interests include swimming, Basketball, Track and field and above all her specialization is Hockey and she is also the secretary of Tonk District Women Hockey Association. She has Coached Banasthali team in many events to glory and has been an integral part of many Chak de! moments for Banasthali.

Prof BR Natarajan opened the program with Roger Bannister Mile Run moments and conducted a quiz on various aspects of Asian Games also known as Asiad. Chemical Engineering students Yukti Dilawari, Sakshi Bajania, Aditi Agarwal, Laxmi Kumari ansered several questions correctly and won appreciation of the audience. Yukti Dilawari introduced Prof Usha Tiwari highlighting her credentials and Sakshi Bajania welcomed her with a colourful bouquet.

Prof Usha Tiwari spoke on stress which is an outcome of modern life style and highlighted pranayam, acupressure, yoga to overcome the same. She explained in detail about Garudasana, Uttanasana, Balasana, Vajrasana, Supta Baddha Konasana and advised the students to use yoga and spports as stress busters.

Faculty member Miss Meenakshi on behalf of Innovative Chemical Engineers - ICE Club presented a glittering memento to Prof Usha Tiwari. Students and Faculty who attended the program today came out with beaming faces and pride that they were indeed part of an institution which is a jewel in the crown among the women’s universities not only in India today but across the globe.
