C4ISR Market – Market Overview

C4ISR is a critical aspect of the defense departments of many countries. It provides guidance to military commanders in making key decisions by providing valuable information and integrating data from multiple sources. It is also used for communication between commanding officers and military units. It uses different technologies such as C2 systems for command and control, SDR, satellites, and other portable devices for communication; it uses airborne and maritime patrolling and SIGINT for ISR activities.

The C4ISR market has seen steady growth in recent years due to increased spending, especially in the Middle East, and the improving economic conditions of developing countries such as China and India. In addition, the growing use of these systems by civil and federal agencies for law enforcement purposes has also led to market growth. Integrated C4ISR systems are gaining significant acceptance in the market and their use is likely to increase in the next five years as these systems allow easy access to information to take decisions instantly. The defense sector is also increasingly turning to commercial satellites for cost effective communication. Another trend in the market is the growing use of UAV in ISR activities to gather critical information during wartime.

The use of advanced technologies has also enhanced the scope of the C4ISR market. These systems are now being used by civil government agencies to predict and minimize losses caused due to natural disasters. Traditional C4ISR systems use separate stand-alone units and equipment for different functions and were meant for specific mission requirements; this makes it necessary to collect and analyze information from multiple sources and use separate systems and displays, which is time-consuming. To tackle this issue, vendors are now designing integrated C4ISR systems, which provide seamless interoperability among different mutually supporting systems, ease of use, and data security. This also results in cost advantages and process simplifications for OEMs as they do not have to upgrade or integrate existing systems.

Concurrently, the defense sector has been increasingly using commercial SATCOMs that have similar frequencies and capabilities to MILSAT. The increase in demand for more bandwidth to connect ground forces and to build a network for unmanned aircrafts has resulted in high dependence of the military on commercial SATCOM. With COTS products, defense departments can get the latest technology for shorter lease periods, resulting in reduced costs. In 2013, the US DOD has allocated close to 40% of its communication satellite budget to SATCOM.

December 20, 2017 - M7 Aerospace, LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Elbit Systems of America, LLC announced that it is awarded a contract from DynCorp International to provide Life Cycle Contractor Support (LCCS) for the U.S. Army's C-26 and UC-35 aircraft fleet. The award is for a one year base period of up to $25 million, and five single year option periods. If all options are exercised, the total contract is valued at up to $176 million. Services will be managed in San Antonio, Texas.

December 15, 2017 - BAE Systems announced that it is developing a new capability that will enable US Navy (USN) ships to simultaneously transmit and receive intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) data from multiple sources. Under the USD81 million contract, BAE Systems’ common data link (iCDL) radio will be integrated to a Ball Aerospace antenna to allow USN battle groups and allies to share large quantities of critical ISR data, such as voice, imagery, and full-motion video, across platforms and networks, BAE Systems’ C4ISR Product Line.

December 14, 2017 - Cubic Corporation announced that its Cubic Mission Solutions (CMS) business division is expanding its footprint with the opening of a new office facility in Tampa, Florida. The new location allows Cubic to further support the U.S. military with critical military Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) technology solutions ensuring safe and effective execution of their missions.

December 11, 2017 - Black Box Corporation (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), a digital solutions provider announced extension of contact to provide supplies and services to the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, under a $10.4 million award from the U.S. Army. The company will provide IT supplies and services to both expand the enterprise system and enable command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C4ISR) capabilities to more users at military installations throughout the country.

December 04, 2017 - CACI International Inc. (US) announced that it has been awarded a $91 million task order to support surveillance and reconnaissance efforts for the U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Research, Development, and Engineering Canter’s flight activity.

November 22, 2017 – BAE announced that it has been awarded a $12.8 million DARPA contract to design a testbed for development of space warfare command and control systems. The goal is to develop a sandbox that will allow the U.S. military, in particular the Joint Space Operations Centre and the Joint Inter-Agency Combined Space Operations Centre, to experiment with new technologies that will enable real-time space command and control.
