Press release from: Pacific Bay Recovery

Many school and college students don’t abuse drugs to simply get high and have fun. Many are using them to boost their efforts to excel in academics. The tremendous pressure to succeed is making them turn to ‘Study Drugs’ that are illegal, dangerous, addictive and even fatal.

Study Drug

Study drugs are usually medications that act as stimulants and are often prescribed to treat ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Since these drugs help to improve focus, students use them to increase concentration and stamina to study.

In this context, drugs that are commonly misused are Adderall, Ritalin, Concerta, Focalin, and Vyvanse. There are some other medications that are also used as study drugs – Modafinil, Adrafinil, and Phenylpiracetam. Students usually obtain these drugs by buying them from students who have a prescription or buying online.

Why Study Drugs?

As mentioned earlier, students use these drugs to cope with the pressures of academic success. They may also use these drugs to improve focus and productivity.

Study Drugs and Addiction

Study drugs are not only illegal, they also have negative and side effects and may lead to addiction too. In an adolescent, the brain is still developing and the repeated abuse of study drugs can lead to long-term cognitive and behavioral effects. It may also increase the likelihood of developing addiction as an adult.

Apart from the side effects and possibility of addiction, using these study drugs can lead to dangerous outcomes, such as overdose which can further cause heart attack, stroke, and liver failure. Mixing these drugs with other substances can prove fatal.

What should you do instead?

Rather than using harmful, illegal, and possibly lethal study drugs to excel in academics, here are some tips you can use to succeed.

• Be Well-Rested – The brain functions better when you have been resting and sleeping well.
• Be Transparent – If you or another student is struggling, talk to your school counsellor, teachers or parents when you feel overwhelmed.
• Be Organized – Keeping track of deadlines is important to know what should be done by when so that you can plan your study time more efficiently.
• Be Disciplined – It is good to be ‘well-rounded’ and enjoy activities other than academics or extra-curricular activities, keep academics your priority to prevent last-minute pressure.
• Be Realistic – No one is perfect. Keep realistic targets for yourself and don’t be too hard on yourself.
