Werum PAS-X MES Successfully Implemented at West Pharmaceutical Services in Le Nouvion, France

GMP-compliant production of elastomer stoppers based on PAS-X PHARMA

Lueneburg, Germany, October 5, 2006 – West Pharmaceutical Services (WPS) Deutschland GmbH & Co. now employs a Manufacturing Execution System (MES) based on Werum Software & Systems’ standard MES product PAS X PHARMA. Supported by Werum, WPS has just successfully finished the MES implementation for optimizing the manufacture of packaging components at their site in Le Nouvion, France.

Following this first installation, WPS is planning to roll out the solution to a total of five sites in Europe and Asia. Earlier this year Werum announced that West Pharmaceutical Services, Inc. (NYSE: WST) will purchase and implement the PAS-X MES solutions for their North American plants.

At the site of Le Nouvion the company produces a wide variety of rubber stoppers in different configurations for the pharmaceutical industry. As a supplier and service provider for the pharmaceutical industry, WPS must comply with relevant cGMP regulations. PAS X PHARMA coordinates and supports the manufacturing of the packaging components, starting with the operations of weighing out the rubber compound and going through to final product packaging. Supported by PAS-X with its "right-first-time features" the operator is safely guided through the complex packaging process. The core functions of the production management system are focused on the weighing of raw materials, especially on campaign weighing procedures, and on the functions provided by an integrated Weigh-Pack-Labeling system (WPL), which manages quantity weighing, packaging and labeling of rubber stoppers. In particular for the last production steps executed in the WPL system, WPS needed maximum flexibility to meet their customers’ individual requirements on pack sizes, multi-packaging, and sampling.

Werum’s PAS-X system receives shop floor orders and additional order data from the higher-order ERP system SAP R/3 and returns transactional information as the order progresses. PAS-X provides these standard interfaces. For weighing operations, WPS is using weighing systems by Mettler-Toledo.
