Melbourne plumbers warn residents to dangers of faulty gas heaters

LOCAL plumbers are calling for householders to be diligent when it comes to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning as a state-wide gas safety education program is introduced for plumbers.

The program run by Master Plumbers in conjunction with the Victorian Building Authority and Energy Safe Victoria is aimed to update their knowledge and skills with the installation and servicing of gas heaters.

Plumber Dean Nourdean of The 24 Hour Melbourne Plumber says that he has noticed customers rarely clean or maintain their gas heaters.

“Residents should start servicing their heaters every one to two years,” he said.

“Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. Any appliance that burns gas and has a heat exchanger can crack at any time.”

More than 20 thousand registered plumbers and gasfitters across Victoria have been invited to the events which will teach plumbers how to conduct a carbon monoxide spillage test and understand the effect of negative air pressure on the safe operation of gas appliances.

Faulty and poorly maintained gas heaters run the risk of leaking carbon monoxide, a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas which can cause death or chronic illness.

Open-flued heaters are the most common to leak, however all heaters including central heating units, wall units and space heaters should be maintained by a qualified plumber or gasfitter.

The next session available for plumbers in Melbourne is on Monday, August 27 & 28 at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre.
