The Crystalline Chambers of Steven Glatt’s Work in Enigmatic Perspectives at Agora Gallery

Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature Arizona artist, Steven Glatt, in Enigmatic Perspectives. The exhibition is scheduled to run from January 08, 2010 through January 29, 2010 (opening reception: Thursday, January 14, 2010).
The large-scale paintings by Steven Glatt open up channels of meditative repose in his audience. There is an aesthetic correlation to rock in many of Glatt’s works, with some images pouring down the canvas like fiery lava while others take the appearance of the crystalline chambers of geodes. We become lost in the image as color and form join together to dazzle and confound our sense of time and space. His palette radiates energy, whilst hues of purple and turquoise appear to vibrate and shift.

Glatt’s work might bring to mind the Color Field painters, like the writhing organic forms of Clyfford Still or the contemplation of Mark Rothko, but Glatt’s oeuvre stands alone for its elemental sensorial experience. He is a self-taught painter raised in the backcountry of North Dakota who developed an outsider’s relationship with art. He paints from within, rendering unique spiritual forms. "My work comes from a place that few people get to visit," Glatt explains. "This place is blessed and cursed." He lives and works in Tempe, Arizona.
