SY "HORIZONS" offshore the south coast of New Zealand in distress

On 27 July 2009 the German Mr. Bernt Luechtenborg left from Cuxhaven in Germany with his SY “Horizons” to sail twice around the world. Equiped with a satellite-based tracking system from SatPro could the recent and passed positions be followed by interested parties on the hompepage:
www.sail2horizons.com.
On 22 November 2009 Luechtenborg had to send a distress alarm, because the SY “Horizons” was unable to manoeuvre by her own due to a broken rudder. The RESCUE COORDINATION CENTER NEW ZEALAND, organised the salvage of Luechtenborg with the cruising ship SEVEN SEAS MARINER. The decision to abandon his yacht 350 miles offshore the coast was a difficult one. On the one hand he could take the rescue offer of the cruising ship or stay alone on board without any means to manoeuvre his vessel. The decision was made easier through the satellite supported tracking system from SatPro, with which the recent position of the yacht can be transmitted worldwide. He left his yacht with the knowledge to find it again, with the aid of this tracking system.

On the 28 November 2009 Luechtenborg left with a fishing smack the harbour of Bluff to salvage the yacht, which drifted without crew. Thank to the permanent transmission of the positions could the fishing smack reach the yacht without a problem. Owner and yacht are happily reunited without any nameable damage. The tug and tow is expected to be back in the harbour of Bluff on the 01.12.2009. Only trough the use of the SatPro tracking system was Luechtenborg able to avoid an expensive total loss.

You can follow the next position of Luechtenborg and his yacht again, when he continues his travel on the map of: www.satpro.org/kundenlinks/horizons.php (an interesting screensaver)
