JMA Pilani Rajasthan Celebrates International Yoga Day & World Music Day

The theme for this year is Yoga for Peace which means Peace for Soul, Peace for individual, peace for the entire household, peace for the village, peace for the town, peace for the district, peace for the state, peace for the country, peace for the world and peace for the universe.

The International Yoga Day is an opportunity to reveal to the world the subtle science of yoga, which everyone can use not just to achieve physical well being but also to learn a better way to live a healthy harmonious and happy life.

Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness. In 2014 United Nations declared 21 June every year as International Yoga Day thanks to the initiative of Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

Defining Yoga, the Bhagavad Gita says: When the mind, restrained by the practice of yoga, attains to quietude and when seeing self by the self, one is satisfied in one’s own self, the individual feels that infinite bliss can be grasped by the intellect, transcending the senses and established therein, the individual never moves from reality …. Let that be known by the name of yoga, the severance from union with pain.

To quote one of the most respected authority on Yoga Sri BKS Iyengar “ Yoga an ancient but perfect science deals with the evolution of humanity. This evolution includes all aspects of one’s being from bodily health to self realization. Yoga means union – the union of body with consciousness and consciousness with the soul.”

Both Yoga and Music have a lot to do with triveni sangam and triple point equilibrium of Mind Body and Soul and the world at large is fortunate that both days are being celebrated together on 21 Jun 2018 which also happens to be Summer Solstice. According to Swiss Philosopher Henri Frederic Amiel, Music is harmony, harmony is perfection, perfection is our dream, and our dream is heaven. June 21 is observed as the World Music Day and the legacy is said to have originated in France with Fete de la Musique, a music festival that began in 1982 due to the initiatives by Jack Lang, the French Minister of Culture. However, it is said that the American musician Joel Cohen had put the idea in 1976 itself.

Smt. JMA Pilani organized a colourful function in the school play ground to celebrate Yoga day and music day. Principal Mrs Booma Natarajan gave an overview of the Yoga, music and significance of the day. The School Physical Education Teacher Sri Mahendra Singh anchored the yoga sessions in which Principal, teachers and staff enthusiastically participated in performing various asanas.
