Taiwan begins building permanent housing for Morakot disaster victims at Da-ai Park

On November 15, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Da-ai permanent housing park situated in Kaohsiung County’s Yuemei Farm. Construction of the park area is being aided by the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation for victims of the August 8, 2009 floods. President Ma Ying-jeou, Legislative Yuan Speaker Wang Jin-pyng and Kaohsiung County Magistrate Yang Chiu-hsing all attended the ceremony.

President Ma in his remarks at the ceremony noted that Typhoon Morakot wreaked havoc in southern Taiwan three months ago. He is very grateful to the Executive Yuan’s Post-Disaster Reconstruction Commission, the Kaohsiung County Government and compassionate citizens from all sectors of society for helping to eliminate obstacles and complete all planning for the construction in only three months after the disaster. President Ma also promised that the government will take up the responsibility of taking care of disaster victims in terms of medical care, schooling, home care and employment.

Tzu Chi’s Da-ai Park in Yuemei Farm is expected to include 1,540 permanent houses to accommodate disaster victims from Namaxia, Jiashan, Taoyuan, Maolin and Liugui townships. The first batch of 274 houses is scheduled for completion at the end of January next year before the lunar New Year. In the future, the Ministry of the Interior will commission private charity groups to set up a life rehabilitation center in the park and invite relevant professionals to provide comprehensive care and services, which include psychological counseling, medical treatment, educational counseling and employment services.

The Hon Hai Group plans to get involved in the development of organic farming by guiding the participation of disaster area inhabitants in the industry to allow them to provide for themselves. Hon Hai will also introduce wireless broadband service, LED illumination and green building equipment. Hon Hai Group Chairman Terry Guo stated that the Tzu Chi Da-ai Park will provide an environment that fosters integration of the three inalienable essentials to living: “life, production and the ecology.”
