UN World Environment Day WED 2018 – Banasthali School of Earth Sciences offers Holistic Programs

Countries across all latitudes and longitudes observe 05 Jun every year as World Environment Day – WED. Starting from 1972, the United Nations, through this day, stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. The theme chosen for 2013 is "Beat Plastic Pollution”.

Right from its inception Banasthali which is World’s largest fully residential women’s university spread across 1000 acres with 16000 students has focused on environment friendly activities. It is known that for making a meter of khadi fabric, just three liters of water is required while for making a meter of mill fabric, 55 liters of water is needed. According to Vice Chancellor Prof Aditya Shastri a highly acclaimed alumnus of BITS Pilani, State University of New York – SUNY Stony Brook and MIT USA, for all students, faculty and staff of Banasthali, “Khadi for Fashion - Khadi for Nation”, “Khadi is Not only a Fabric - It is a lifestyle” are not mere slogans as wearing zero effect zero defect Khadi the most environment friendly fabric is an integral part of simple living at Banasthali. Most are under the impression that study of Environment is all about issues concerning air – water – noise – land pollution but in reality to have a holistic view of Environment, Banasthali firmly believes that one must comprehensively look at Earth Sciences which includes Geology, Geography, Remote sensing along with environmental sciences.

The evolutionary details of this school starts from Geography department established in 2008 followed by Remote Sensing in 2011 and then after Geology and commissioning of the new building in 2013 followed by Environmental Science in 2016. With state of the art facilities and faculty from lead institutions in India, Banasthali School of Earth Sciences is a hub of over 400 students enrolled in bachelors masters and doctoral programmers in various departments. Befittingly, the annual festival of the School of Earth Sciences is named COSMOS which typically includes Technical Exhibition, Rangoli competition, invited lectures by domain experts, cultural Programs, debate and quiz competitions.

The BSc Geology curriculum includes courses on Elementary Physical & Structural Geology, Elements of Mineralogy Economic Geology and Geo Chemistry, Petrology and Crystallography, Paleontologyand Stratigraphy, Hydrogeology Environmental and Engineering Geology, Photo Geology Remote Sensing and Geology of India etc. The Faculty member of the Geology Department have pursued research topics such as Quaternary Geology, Sedimentology, Micropaleontology and Palaeoclimatic studies of the Great Rann of Kutch, Gujarat funded by the SERB (DST), New Delhi.

The curriculum of Geography includes Physical & Human Geography, Economic Geography, India and World Regional Geography, Geographical Thought etc. The main thrust areas of Geography department are Geomorphology, Climatology, Oceanography, Bio/Environmental, Population, Regional Development and Planning, Agriculture, Urban and Rural, Political etc.

With state of the art facilities, the MTech Remote Sensing program of Banasthali includes Principles of Remote Sensing, Fundamentals of geographic information science, Applied statistics & cartography and digital mapping, Surveying, global positioning systems and mobile mapping, Computer Programming, Spatial database systems, analysis and modeling, Digital Image Processing, Spatial decision support systems, Research methodology & project management, Applications of remote sensing, reading electives and Project – Thesis work. The MSc Environmental Sciences interdisciplinary curriculum includes courses on Energy audit and conservation, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Physics, Environmental Bio technology etc.

Prof Rashmi Sharma Dean School of Earth Sciences is of the firm opinion that one must learn to live without plastics which is not difficult and is planning to launch an aggressive campaign for the UN slogan “if you can't use it, refuse it!.
