UN Bicycle Day Reminds Unforgettable World Cycle Tour by Banasthali Professor Dr Hamsavahini Singh Family

As per Resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 12 April 2018, the first official World Bicycle Day was celebrated on June 3, 2018. The bicycle is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation. The bicycle can serve as a tool for development and as a means not just of transportation but also of access to education, health care and sport.

The synergy between the bicycle and the user fosters creativity and social engagement and gives the user an immediate awareness of the local environment. The bicycle is a symbol of sustainable transportation and conveys a positive message to foster sustainable consumption and production, and has a positive impact on climate.

Two decades back on 19 Jan 1999, hailing the bicycle as a humble environment friendly machine which truly liberates the rider to break through latitudes and longitudes to spread the message of non violence, peace and love, Sri Rajpal Singh Chouhan an officer from Rajasthan Administrative Services RAS embarked on a global tour. He cycled across India, Bangladesh, Singapore and Indonesia and at Kuala Lumpur Malaysia on 10 May 1999 was joined by his then 8 year old daughter Aditya Divya along with his wife Dr Hamsavahini presently Professor who teaches German Language at Banasthali World’s largest fully residential women’s University.

They cycled through Japan, USA, Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Every day their typical schedule was 7 – 8 hours cycling covering about 90 – 100 kms. Hey stayed with host families, unknowns who became lifelong friends, temples, churches, Gurdwaras, mosques and what not. From Germany, Dr Hamsavahini and daughter Aditya Divya returned to India on 26 Jun 2000 to commence schooling.

Sri Rajpalji cycled through Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Moldavia, Ukraine, Georgia, Iran, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Pakistan and and concluded at Jaipur in India during the auspicious Uttarayan in 2001. It is worth mentioning that Sri Rajpal had also done in 2008, a cycle tour of China for three months. Two books on World Cycle Tour have also been authored by Sri Rajpalji.

Dr Hamsavahini is a source of inspiration and motivation for the 16000 students studying at the 1000 acre campus of Banasthali in Rajasthan to become dremers performers and achievers. She keeps sharing interesting episodes which happened during the world cycle tour by the family. What this family foresaw about bicycle being a global integrator to spread love and peace has become true befittingly with UN declaring 03 June as World Bicycle Day.
