Fusion splicing is the process of joining or welding two optical glass fibers together by an electric arc at their end faces to form a single large optical fiber. Fusion splicers are used to joint two optical fibers permanently together so that the light can pass through them without any or with very little loss of light. Fusion splicing ensures excellent connection between fibers as compared to mechanical splicing, which is a temporary joint, at lower cost.Fusion splicershave low variable cost, as compared to other splicing methods; however, their upfront investment cost is higher. Insertion Loss (IL) with mechanical splicing could vary between 0.2 DB to 0.75 DB.However, fusion splicer’s continuous connection provision to fiber optic, the insertion loss is lesser than 0.1 DB, thereby providing superior performance. Some advantages of fusion splicing are that it has the highest mechanical strength, can bear extremely high temperature fluctuations, lowest insertion loss, and has lowest back reflection
