Homeowners Have Few Effective Options for Stopping Spring Woodpecker Damage

Press release from: Joy of Birds

VANCOUVER, BC, April 11, 2018– A new survey of scientific studies on reducing woodpecker damage to homes reveals that six of the eight most-recommended interventions have little or no value. Only properly installed bird exclusion netting stops 100 per cent of woodpecker damage; reflective “scare tape” helps in the short term.

"Many homeowners struggle with woodpecker damage in spring as the noisy birds compete for food, territory and mates. Driven by hardwired instincts, woodpeckers make small and large holes in houses, damage that can quickly lead to big secondary problems,” says blogger Joy Thurlow, who covered the issue on JoyofBirds.com.

Secondary problems include infestation by bird parasites, mold, wind/water damage, and invasion by other wildlife using old woodpecker nests.

Noting that some of the claims made for woodpecker deterrent products are not only questionable, but anatomically impossible given what is known about bird physiology, Thurlow decided to investigate scientific literature on controlling woodpecker damage.

While research is scarce, scientists at Cornell University, the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture and the University of Basel, Switzerland (among others) have tested the effectiveness of various deterrents including reflective tape, decoy predators, sonic/ultrasonic sound emitters, sticky gels, alternative feeding, chemical irritants and man-made nest boxes.

Their conclusions: only properly installed bird netting stops 100 per cent of woodpecker damage. Reflective bird scare tape, while not a total solution, was significantly more effective than any other type of "scare" product.

"Taking action at the first sign of a problem is the key to stopping woodpecker damage," says Thurlow. "Woodpeckers hammer houses for food, territorial defense and nesting. These behaviors are impossible to stop but can be redirected away from your home with some effort. Don’t wait long enough for the woodpecker to breed or by law, you’ll have to leave them alone until the birds are gone, which increases the risk of secondary problems."
