BITS Pilani and Indian Institute of Petroleum Dehradun sign MoU |

The Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), Dehradun established through an act of Parliament in 1959, is an ISO 9001 certified constituent laboratory of Council of Scientific & Industrial Research engaged in research, design and development and consultancy in the hydrocarbon and related areas including petroleum, petrochemicals, natural gas, application of fuels and lubricants, fuel quality, alternative fuels, automotive engineering, engine emission and engine testing. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between BITS and IIP Dehradun was signed on 31 July 2009 with the objective of fostering academic and research interactions between the two institutions leading to scientific and technological advances, and to human resource development, in the thrust areas of IIP, by providing the following: (a) exchange of faculty and scientists; (b) exchange of scientific information and joint publication of research output and reports; (c) organization of joint Seminars / Workshops / Conferences etc at national and international level in the concerned areas; (d) sharing of R&D facilities, library facilities and materials including software and other components developed in-house, as per the rules of both the organizations; (e) continued opportunities for students of BITS to carry out their Practice School / Thesis / Dissertation projects at IIP; (f) admission of sponsored candidates of IIP to the PhD programme / other off campus programmes of BITS as per the admission procedures and other rules and regulations of BITS. There would be no restrictions on the publication of the results of collaborative research except where such outcome has implications for the security of the State. However, issues of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) would be decided by mutual discussion and consent. The two institutions would be free to carry out follow-up research independently. Both BITS and IIP would put in place adequate and reasonable measures to keep confidential information secure so as to prevent any unauthorized use. BITS and IIP would jointly develop and devise implementation strategies and time-bound action plans to effectively meet the desired objectives and goals. Financial arrangements for each specific activity would be decided on a case-to-case basis and brought on record in each case after due approval from heads of both the Institutions. Rights regarding publications, patents, royalty, ownership of software / design / product etc developed under the scope of this MoU would be decided by both the organizations by mutual consent. A Coordination Committee consisting of Vice Chancellor, BITS as Chairman, Director IIP as Co Chairman and two nominees each from IIP and BITS would coordinate and monitor the academic and research programs and all related operational matters within the framework of the academic regulations of BITS and the objectives outlined by IIP. With effect from the date of signing, the MoU would remain in force for three years after which the MoU may be extended for another period on mutually agreeable terms and conditions. Prof L K Maheshwari Vice Chancellor signed the MoU on behalf of BITS while Dr M O Garg Director signed the MoU on behalf of IIP Dehradun. This tie-up of IIP Dehradun with BITS Pilani marks yet another milestone in industry university collaborations.
