Quite possibly Argentina’s most patriotic wine, Tikal “Patriota” is a 60/40 blend of the country’s two signature red wine grapes: Bonarda and Malbec. This juicy, luscious wine is produced by Ernesto Catena along with acclaimed winemaker Luis Reginato. Ernesto continues to push the boundaries of Argentine winemaking excellence, forging ahead from the roots of his family’s longtime winemaking tradition. 2006 Tikal "Patriota" is the perfect wine for an authentically-Argentine backyard feast, as it pairs beautifully with grilled meats and smoky flavors. Skip the hot dogs and invite friends and family over for a traditionally-Argentine asado barbecue, consisting of a series of meats grilled alongside each other and served in turn as they finish cooking. Customary meats include chorizo, ribs, flank steak, and pork. Ed Lehrman, a partner at Vine Connections, says, “Personally, there is nothing better for me than a perfectly grilled morcia, which is the typical short Argentine blood sausage. Believe me, it tastes a lot better than it sounds, and it pairs beautifully with the fruity flavors of Bonarda and Malbec.” Lehrman is available to answer questions about Tikal or share anecdotes about his food and wine experiences in Argentina.
