The unique pen showcases JSC-1A Lunar Simulant, or “moon dust”. Developed for NASA for funded exploration projects, the simulant is used to test equipment and do research as NASA prepares for the next phase of lunar exploration. The simulant replicates the exact chemical composition, mineralogy, particle size, and properties of lunar mare soil. It is mined from a volcanic ash deposit near Flagstaff, Arizona, and commercially transformed into “moon dust” near Dallas, Texas.
