Camera based identification technology speeds up intralogistics |

The basis for optimizing logistical processes is the automated collection of product and customer related data. This is achieved with the fully automated identification system VIPAC. VIPAC is module based and consists of a camera, a CP unit including software, as well as an optional volume measuring system. If information on not machine suitable goods also needs to be automatically recognized, an additional, portable hand-held camera even reads characters, as well as barcodes. Vitronic is presenting three novelties in fact at CeMAT, which will further improve the capabilities of its overall system. High Read Rates at Optimum Delivery Rates: VIPAC identifies handwritten and printed addresses, 1D and 2D codes with maximum read rates on up to six sides of a product, independent of orientation. VIPAC recognizes characters and codes even behind foils. VITRONIC Technology helps identify products at conveying speeds of up to 4.5 m/s. The key element is the new camera component, VICAMssi2, which combines a high-resolution high-speed line scan camera, a compact LED illumination, a compact power supply and, as an option, an attached mini PC for simple identification tasks as an all-integrated stand-alone system. Unlike barcode scanners, the camera takes images of the objects with considerably higher line frequency. Because of the markedly greater data density, even damaged and partly destroyed barcodes as well as codes of only average print quality can be properly identified at maximum read rates. Software algorithms developed by VITRONIC take care of this by extracting the necessary information from the digitalized images. Volume measurement system for use over sorters: VOLUMEC systems measure the volume of an object in 3D. They determine the overall maximum dimensions of an object from the width and height measurements they take. They calculate the dimensions of the smallest cuboid which encompasses the object. Determining the volume facilitates automatic invoicing and revenue recovery, shape analysis, loading optimization and statistics for country specific certification. The latest generation of measuring systems determines the volume certified, even when using cross belt and tilt-tray sorters. This enables the user to directly capture volume and relevant packaging data while sorting. The user is therefore saved from installing multiple separate systems on feeder conveyor systems and thus ensures a high degree of automation with reduced expenditure on ID technology. Hand-held camera also reads characters as well as barcodes at letter and parcel collection points: The VICAMmobile OCR portable hand-held camera is being installed in letter and parcel collection points (depots). The ergonomically designed hand-held camera identifies data such as characters and codes on parcels and goods and displays the image including the read results on a monitor in real time. The VICAMmobile OCR can also be connected to video coding workstations via a fast, intelligent network.
