(openPR) - THOUSAND OAKS, CA – Responding to community concern about reports of a registered sex offender panhandling in a Thousand Oaks shopping center last month, child predator safety educator Pattie Fitzgerald of Safely Ever After, Inc. is offering a free safety workshop for parents. The 90-minute workshop, entitled "An Ounce of Prevention," will be held on Monday, April 28, 2008 at 9:15 a.m. at the Early Childhood Education Center at Temple Adat Elohim, 2420 E. Hillcrest Drive in Thousand Oaks, CA. RSVP is required to attend. Parents can call 805-497-6920 to reserve a seat.

Ms. Fitzgerald will discuss how to talk to kids about personal boundaries, strategies that help kids to identify and avoid "tricky" people and situations, how to recognize "red flags" and warning signs, and why teaching kids “the stranger-danger concept" is not an effective way to protect them from predators.

Fitzgerald is a mother and a certified child safety educator who began teaching predator awareness programs in 2001, after learning a Level 3 registered sex offender had been released into her community. She advocates a positive, non-fearful approach to prevention education.

Fitzgerald says, "Naturally, it can be very upsetting to learn that a registered offender is living right in your own community. But when armed with the right information, we can significantly reduce the chances of something bad happening to our kids."
